THE HILLCATS: Last night Lynchburg bounced out to an early lead and won 8-2 in the series opener of a three-game set with Potomac at City Stadium...Tonight the Hillcats continue a 10-game homestand with the middle-game of their series with Potomac...The Cats begin play tonight two games back of first place Frederick in the Northern Division...
VS. POTOMAC: The Hillcats are 2-2 against the Nationals thus far this season after they dropped the series at Pfitzner Stadium last weekend and won the series opener last night...Lynchburg is 156-147 against Potomac all-time and are 84-71 in the Hill City...Last season the Cats won the season series with the P-Nats 11-9 and were 5-5 at the Pfitz...
STARTING TO COME TOGETHER, PEPPER: Last night Lynchburg won the first game of their current series with Potomac to give the Hillcats back-to-back win for the first time since the first two games of the season...In their last set at Kinston, the Cats won their first series of the season and entering play tonight they have now won three out of four games...With their win and Frederick's loss last night (their fourth straight defeat), Lynchburg has pulled back within two games of first place in the Northern Division...
BACK WITH A BANG: The Hillcats returned home after a 13-game road swing last night and won 8-2 over Potomac...They started last night's game with their biggest offensive inning of the season...The first five Cats got a hit and the first seven reached safely...Lynchburg had a season-high six runs and a season best seven hits in the inning...It was also the first time this season they have batted around in a frame...The victory marked the second time this season the Hillcats have won by five runs or more, both games were 8-2 wins over Potomac in a series opener...
SWEET START: After their win last night, the Hillcats are now 6-1 in series openers this season and have won five in a row after dropping their second game one contest of the season...Last season Lynchburg also started the season 6-1 in series openers, and in fact started the season an astounding 18-1 in the first game of a series and they won 17 in a row after losing their second game one of the campaign...In comparison, last year the Cats were 13-8 after 21 games, this season they are 9-12...This year's squad is still just 3-11 in all games after the series opener...
BAGELS ON THE BOARD: Last night three Hillcats relievers combined to throw four scoreless innings to close out the 8-2 win...The Lynchburg bullpen had allowed at least one run to score in five straight games and in 14 of the last 15 games over a longer stretch...It was just the third time in 21 games played the pen has kept the opponent off the scoreboard...
STRIVING FOR PERFECTION: The Hillcats defense did not commit an error in the 8-2 win over the Nationals...It marked the fifth straight game the Cats did not make an error...To start the season Lynchburg had 21 errors through their first 13 games, which was at the time the most in the Carolina League and their .956 fielding percentage was last as well...Since they committed a season-high four errors on April 21 to give them at least one error in ten straight games and in 12 of their first 13, the Hillcats have just two errors in their last eight games played...Their 23 errors are the third fewest in the CL and their .970 fielding percentage is tied for third in the circuit...
TONE SETTER: OF Josh Fellhauer went 1-for-4 with a run in last night's game to extend his hitting streak to a season-high 11 games...Over that time he is batting .326 (14-for-43) over that time with four doubles, a home run, five RBI and eight runs scored...He led off two games on the road swing with a home run and started last night's contest with a base-hit...He has now passed INF Carlos Mendez for the longest hit streak of the season for the Hillcats, as he hit in the first ten games he played in this season...
DO IT ALL DEVIN: C Devin Mesoraco went 1-for-4 last night with a home run, two RBI, and a run...His homer last night was his team leading fifth of the season and he is now tied for fifth in the Carolina League...He also leads the team with 14 RBI...On Thursday night at Kinston he laid down his first bunt single of the season and stole his first two bags of the campaign...He did not steal a base all of last year...He also absorbed a crushing blow by an Indians runner trying to score and held on to the ball for the out to keep it a 3-2 lead for the Hillcats in the fifth inning...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Brad Peacock was selected by Washington in the 41st round of the 2006 draft out of Palm Beach Central high school in Florida...He made his professional debut in 2007 with the GCL Nationals and went 1-1 with a 3.89 ERA in 13 games (seven starts)...In 2008 he pitched for both full-season Low-A Hagerstown and Short-Season Low-A Vermont...With Hagerstown he went 0-5 with a 9.09 ERA in eight starts with the Suns...In his time with Vermont he had a 4-7 mark with a 3.12 ERA in 14 starts...Last season he returned to Hagerstown and had a 5-8 record with a 4.05 ERA in 19 games (17 starts) before earning a promotion to Advanced-A...In eight games (seven starts) with Potomac he went 3-3 with a 4.34 ERA...This year he has returned to Potomac and has gone 0-2 with a 5.23 ERA in four starts...Last season he made one start against Lynchburg...He allowed three runs (two earned) in six innings and took a no-decision in a game the Nationals eventually won 3-2 in 11 innings...His last start this season was against Lynchburg as well last Sunday in Woodbridge, working five and 1/3 innings and allowing four runs on seven hits...He took a no-decision in a game the Nationals won in walk-off fashion 6-4 in 10 innings...
