Frederick Goes 1-for-10 With Runners In Scoring Position in Defeat

April 9, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release

A night later than expected the Frederick Keys opened the 2010 season with a 3-1 defeat in Lynchburg on Friday night. Frederick received multi-hit nights from RF Ronnie Welty, 1B Joe Mahoney and 3B Bobby Stevens but it was not enough.

Lynchburg grabbed the lead in the second inning off of Keys starter Rick Zagone (0-1) when they loaded the bases with nobody out. Zagone tiptoed out of the jam with only one run allowed getting a double play ground ball off of the bat of Lynchburg 2B Cody Puckett to stifle the rally. Zagone allowed two runs, one of which earned in four innings in the debut.

But the Keys could not rally. Trailing 3-0 in the eighth inning Keys C Brian Ward walked to lead-off the inning. After a Hillcats pitching change, two groundouts moved Ward top third base. He then scored on an RBI-single by Welty to drive home the Keys first run of the year. Welty led Class-A Delmarva with 67 RBI's in 2009.

The Keys failed to score again though. Frederick would end the night 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

A trio of Keys relievers Oliver Drake, Raul Rivero and Brett Jacobson kept the Keys in it allowing one run in four innings out of the pen. Drake will move into the starting rotation on opening night in Frederick on Tuesday, April 13 against Myrtle Beach.

The Keys play a doubleheader Saturday, April 10 beginning at 6:05 p.m. RHP Ryan O'Shea and LHP Nate Nery will make the starts for Frederick. Coverage will begin at 5:55 p.m. with The UPS Store Pre-Game Show.

Frederick will return home for opening night 2010 Tuesday April 13 against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. For tickets to the 7:00 p.m. start contact the Keys Box Office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS or purchase online at frederickkeys.com.
