Hillcats beat Keys 3-1

Matt Fairel threw five and 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the win and Devin Mesoraco went 2-for-2 and picked up an RBI as the Lynchburg Hillcats took the opener over the Frederick Keys, 3-1.

The opener was all Hillcats in the early-going. Carlos Mendez reached on a lead-off single to start the frame against Keys starting pitcher Rick Zagone. Devin Mesoraco singled him over and Neftali Soto walked to load the bases with nobody out. Cody Puckett then grounded into a double play to score the first run.

That held until the Hillcats got on the board again in the fourth. Mesoraco started the two-out raly with a walk and scored on an error by Frederick third baseman Bobby Stevens. The Hillcats led 2-0 at that point, but no RBI were awarded.

Lynchburg starter Matt Fairel lasted gave up only three hits and three walks while striking out two in 5.1 innings. He picked up his first win of the season. Fairel left in the sixth inning with two runners on, but Justin Freeman shut the Keys down in relief.

In the bottom half of that inning, Lynchburg tacked on another run. After an Alex Buchholz lead-off double, Mesoraco picked up an RBI single.

Freeman went one more scoreless and walked the lead-off hitter in the eighth inning. He was pulled for Aguido Gonzalez. The Keys scored their lone run after Gonzalez gave up a two-out single to left fielder Ronnie Welty.

Mace Thurman pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his first save of the season.

Each of the one through six hitters in the Hillcats lineup picked up a hit on opening night.

Lynchburg and Frederick continue their 4-game series with a doubleheader Saturday night starting at 6:05. The probable starters for the first game are Curtis Partch (LYN) and Ryan O'Shea (FRE) and in the second Brad Boxberger (LYN) and Nate Nery (FRE). It's "Smoke Free" School Night at Calvin Falwell Field, and the gates open at 5 p.m.
