D.C. United News Release
WASHINGTON, D.C. (November 12, 2004) - In an announcement by Major League Soccer in advance of the 2004 MLS Awards Gala, Freddy Adu's May 19th goal against the Los Angeles Galaxy was named Nickelodeon GaS Play of the Year. Also earning Sierra Mist Goal of the Week honors, the strike was Adu's second of the year, coming in United's 4-2 loss to the Galaxy.
"We are pleased that Freddy was the recipient of this award," said United Technical Director Dave Kasper. "This goal was absolutely brilliant. It is a taste of many future plays that we can look forward to seeing from Freddy."
Showing poise beyond his years, Adu dribbled the ball through four Galaxy defenders into space at the top of the 18-yard box before blistering a shot into the upper left corner of the net, past an outstretched Kevin Hartman.
Throughout the 2004 season, Nickelodeon Games and Sports featured a MLS Play of the Week segment, highlighting the best play from around the League each week. The segment aired on the GaS network, in MLS stadiums and on MLS regional telecasts. Nickelodeon viewers selected the Play of the Year from the weekly winners by voting online at www.nick.com/gas.
