MLS Cup 2005 Awarded to Frisco Soccer & Entertainment Center
November 12, 2004 - Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release
NEW YORK (Friday, November 11, 2004) - Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber announced today that next season's edition of the League's championship game, MLS Cup 2005, will be held on Sunday, November 13, 2005 at the new Frisco Soccer & Entertainment Center, the highly-anticipated home for newly named MLS club FC Dallas (formerly the Dallas Burn), scheduled to open spring of 2005.
"It is only fitting that the League's marquee event is staged in what will be the world's largest professional and youth soccer complex in Frisco, Texas," MLS Commissioner Don Garber said. "The celebrations of the League's 10th season and the opening of the stadium in the new soccer capital of Texas will make 2005 a year to remember and we look forward to capping it off in Frisco with MLS Cup."
MLS Cup 2005 will mark the first time that the League's champion is crowned in the state of Texas with the nine previous title games held in California, Massachusetts, Washington, D.C. and Ohio. Information on MLS Cup 2005 tickets and on season tickets for FC Dallas' inaugural campaign at the Frisco Soccer & Entertainment Center is available by calling: 214-979-0303.
"Our organization is honored to host the premier event in Major League Soccer," said FC Dallas President and General Manager Greg Elliott. "Being awarded this match is another sign this stadium is becoming a magnet for premier events throughout the world of soccer. We look forward to working with the City of Frisco to stage a wonderful celebration on behalf of the league."
FC Dallas, formerly known as the Dallas Burn, will play its entire 10th season home schedule at the Frisco Soccer & Entertainment Center beginning next spring. Located at the intersection of Main Street and the North Dallas Toll Road in Frisco, the soccer stadium and complex was made possible by a historic and innovative public/private partnership between the Hunt Sports Group, the City of Frisco and its Economic and Community Development Corporations, as well as Collin County and the Frisco Independent School District.
The 117-acre facility will feature a 21,193 seat soccer stadium, accommodating all FC Dallas MLS matches, major concerts, international soccer matches and high school football. Adjacent to the stadium will be 17 regulation-size, tournament-grade soccer fields which will be utilized on a year-round basis, making the Center the focal point of youth and adult soccer in North Texas as well as the future destination of the most prestigious local, regional, national and international competitions. An estimated 1.4 million spectators and participants are expected to visit the facility annually.
The site will also house the new corporate headquarters for the United States Youth Soccer Association (US Youth Soccer). The 20-year agreement with US Youth Soccer, coupled with a 15-year marketing agreement between FC Dallas and the North Texas State Soccer Association, makes the Frisco Soccer & Entertainment Center a focal point for soccer in the nation. North Texas Soccer is the largest joint youth and adult soccer association in the United States, representing 145,000 youth players, 24,000 adult players, 40,000 indoor players, 25,000 coaches, 6,600 referees, and over 1,300 administrators. Including member spouses and parents, the North Texas Soccer family is estimated to be at least 500,000 strong.
