New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ - A ninth inning rally turned into an extra innings win for the New Jersey Jackals at Skylands Park, as they defeated the Skyhawks 3-2 on opening night.

Sussex scored the first run of the 2007 season in the bottom of the second inning. A Scott Grimes double set up runners at second and third with no one out, and a Matt Ceriani ground out pushed across a run, giving the Skyhawks the early advantage.

Two innings later, the Skyhawks added another run on a B.J. Richmond double to take a 2-0 lead over the Jackals.

In the meantime, Sussex starter Ryan Dittfurth was pitching a gem. The right-hander limited the Jackals to just four hits in seven innings of work. He struck out five, walked only one, and tossed an economical 84 pitches in the no decision.

With a 2-0 lead in the ninth, the Skyhawks looked primed to pick up the win, but the Jackals had different plans. Zack Smithlin scored on a groundout by Jeremy Pickrel to bring the Jackals within one, but with two outs. The next batter, Alex Frazier, drilled the first pitch from reliever Fernando Rijo over the center field wall, sending the ballgame in the tenth.

In the tenth, New Jersey sealed the deal when Jud Thigpen crushed a solo blast to left.

Reliever Justin Garza picked up the win for the Jackals. The loss went to Spencer Steward. Rusty Tucker earned the win New Jersey, while striking out one in the tenth.

With the win, the Jackals improved their all-time record against Sussex to 12-3.
