Fourth Line Lifts Pens to Fifth Straight Win

October 28, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Hockey pundits preach depth, citing that star power can only take a team so far. Success is achieved most often by teams that boast depth.

That's exactly how the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins were able to achieve a 4-3 win over the Binghamton Senators and extend their winning streak to five games, as the Penguins saw a big time performance from its fourth line.

Well, don't tell Wilkes-Barre/Scranton head coach Mike Sullivan they're the fourth line.

"Everyone keeps calling it the fourth line, but I don't think of it as a fourth line," Sullivan said. "Our team is special in the sense that all of our players are talented and can make plays, and we trust them to make plays."

The Penguins' offensive unit of Tyler Biggs, Jean-Sébastien Dea, and Ty Loney cashed in for a combined two goals and three assists, including the game-winner off the stick of Dea at 10:56 of the third period.

Biggs, playing in his first game with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, scored to give the Penguins a 3-1 advantage at the 6:10 mark of the second.

Biggs added an assist on Dea's goal, and Loney earned his first two points of the season with helpers on both on his line's tallies.

Binghamton wouldn't allow the Penguins to cruise to an easy victory off the coattails of Biggs-Dea-Loney, as Cole Schneider put forth a two-goal performance of his own, including the tying goal late in the second period.

Both of Schneider's goals came on the man advantage, tying the number of power play goals surrendered by Wilkes-Barre/Scranton all season.

A flurry of scoring in the second period saw three goals scored in 1:33 of game time, a surge that included the first professional goal for Binghamton's Chris Carlisle, Biggs' first goal as a Penguin, as well as goalie Tristan Jarry's first professional assist.

The offensive outburst from both teams saw the Senators cut the Penguins' lead to 3-2, and Binghamton eventually evened the score at 17:40 of the second with Schneider's second of the game.

Dominik Simon scored his third goal in as many games by picking the top corner over Chris Driedger's glove 90 seconds into the game to put the Penguins up 1-0. An assist was awarded to Tom Kühnhackl, giving him three points in his first three games of the season with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Kael Mouillierat scored in his first game back from a two-game suspension to make it 2-0 Penguins 1:31 into the second. David Warsofsky earned his first point as a Penguin and first point since Feb. 28, 2015 on Mouillierat's goal.

In addition to earning his first professional assist, Jarry stopped 26 shots en route to improving his season record to 2-0-0-0.

Driedger made 27 saves for the Senators, as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton outshot Binghamton 31-29, including a 15-6 shot margin in favor of the Penguins in the third and final frame.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's power play, which came into the game operating with a 32.1% success rate, good for second in the AHL, was stifled by Driedger and Binghamton's penalty killing corps on its only two opportunities of the game.

The Penguins are back at it again with their third game of a current seven game home stand and first Fan Friday's game of the year when they take on the Hartford Wolf Pack on Friday, Oct. 30. Fan Friday's are presented by Eyewitness News and feature $14 tickets and $2 beers on select drafts from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Start time for the top two teams in the Atlantic Division is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
