Syracuse Crunch News Release
TORONTO, ONTARIO - The Syracuse Crunch toppled the Toronto Marlies, 3-1, tonight at the Ricoh Coliseum.
Joel Vermin and Matt Taormina both notched their first goal of the season, while goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy made 29 saves in his season debut.
The win moves Syracuse to 3-3-0-1 on the season and gives the team a 1-0 lead in the eight-game season series. Toronto is now 5-3-0-0.
Crunch goaltender Vasilevskiy turned aside 29 of 30 and gained his first victory this season. Marlies netminder Antoine Bibeau allowed three goals on 29 shots. Syracuse was unable to find the back of the net on two power play opportunities. The penalty kill unit shut down one of two Toronto man-advantages.
The Marlies were first to score at the 5:29 mark of the opening period. Frederik Gauthier won the faceoff in the left circle and sent it towards the blue line. Nikita Soshnikov gained control of the puck and threw one on net from a sharp angle. Richard Clune found the rebound and jammed it home with one second remaining in Toronto's power play.
Clune's goal was the last time the Marlies would light the lamp. Vermin evened the score with 5:05 remaining in the first. After receiving a pass from Tye McGinn in the neutral zone, Vermin skated in and sniped it past Bibeau from the right wing side. Luke Witkowski recorded the secondary helper.
At the 6:56 mark of the second, Anthony DeAngelo gave the Crunch the lead when he fired a shot that rung off the crossbar and trickled across the goal line. Assists went to Mike Angelidis and Henri Ikonen.
The Crunch solidified their victory with 4:29 remaining in the contest. Taormina powered a one-timer through traffic from the center point to put Syracuse up, 3-1. Jonathan Marchessault and Jeff Tambellini earned assists on the goal.
The Crunch return to the War Memorial Arena to host the Hershey Bears on Friday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.
