Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Two big innings were the Delmarva Shorebirds downfall in a 7-3 loss to the Charleston RiverDogs on Thursday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Ballpark.
The Shorebirds (15-27) battled back from a four-run second to cut the lead to one, only to see the RiverDogs (29-13) pull away with a three-run eighth.
The second started for Charleston with a single for Willy Vasquez and a double for Oneill Manzueta to put two in scoring position. Luis Leon drove them both in with a single to make it 2-0. After a flyout, Edwin Barragan drilled a two-run homer, his first of the season, to double the lead to 4-0.
The Shorebirds were gifted three runs in the fifth. Erinson Placencia and Michael Mantecón both walked to start the frame and were escorted around the bases on two wild pitches, scoring Placencia, and leaving Mantecón at third. Luis Valdez then walked and stole second, with the throw going into center allowing Mantecón to score before Valdez scored himself when the centerfielder overran the ball, making it a 4-3 game.
Charleston created some breathing room in the eighth. Vasquez tripled with one out and Manzueta singled him home. Leon then walked before Freddvil Chevez reached on an error to load the bases. Barragan singled home another run before Shane Sasaki plated another with a fielder's choice to bring the game to its final line of 7-3.
Jack Snyder (3-0) earned the win in relief for Charleston, throwing three scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and a walk, striking out four.
Daniel Federman (0-5) suffered the loss for Delmarva, allowing four runs over a career-high six frames, allowing six hits while striking out two. Despite the loss, Federman was nearly perfect outside of the second inning, retiring the final 10 batters he faced.
The Shorebirds continue their series with the RiverDogs on Friday, May 27. Juan De Los Santos (1-4, 2.50) is scheduled to go for Delmarva against Daiveyon Whittle (0-0, 0.00) for Charleston. First pitch from Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Ballpark is slated for 7:05 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on theshorebirds.com with Sam Jellinek on the call.
