Alexandria, LA - The Harlingen WhiteWings (17-35) scored four runs in the first, fifth and sixth innings to get Caleb Balbuena his first managerial win with a 13-2 victory over the Alexandria Aces (32-23) tonight at Bringhurst Field.
The win snaps a five-game losing streak and breaks a five-game Aces winning streak.
The WhiteWings to off to a quick start against Alejandro Martinez (3-1) in the first. Kevin Griffin and David Cardona drew walks, Brian Nichols hit an RBI-double, and Ryan Fox belted a three-run home run over the centerfield wall to make it 4-0.
In the second, Palmer Karr Jr. singled against Alex Gett (2-6), moved to second on a ground out, and to third on an infield single by Andre Marshall. On a 2-1 pitch, Marshall stole second and the throw went into centerfield, allowing Karr to score to make it 4-1.
That would be all against Gett, who turned his second-straight gem, going six innings and scattering four hits while striking out six.
With one out in the third, Fox was hit by a pitch. Trey Hendricks and Matt Kramer followed with walks. One out later, Joel Gonzalez drew an RBI-walk to make it 5-1.
The WhiteWings blew it open by batting around in the fifth. Kramer and Fowler led off with singles to knock out Martinez. Ronald Ramirez came in and walked Gonzalez. Amadeo Zazueta followed with a two-run single. After a Griffin single re-laoded the bases, Cardona drew an RBI-walk and Nichols hit an RBI-ground out to make it 9-1.
The WhiteWings hit around against Brad Turney in the sixth, scoring four more runs. Kramer led off by getting hit by a pitch. Fowler followed with a double, Gonzalez hit an RBI-double, and Zazueta hit a two-run double. Griffin walked, and two batters later, Fox hit an RBI-single to make it 13-1.
The Aces got a run in the bottom of the ninth against Brian Daly. Marshall drew a leadoff nine-pitch walk. With one out, Madison Edwards walked. With two outs, Bryan Sabatella singled to load the bases. Albert Gonzalez followed with an RBI-single to complete the scoring.
The WhiteWings and Aces play game two of this five-game series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Juan Jimenez (2-2) will face left-hander Ramon Portillo (4-2).
