Jupiter Hammerheads News Release
JUPITER, Fla. - The Jupiter Hammerheads will send a pair of hitters and pitchers to the 50th Florida State League All-Star Game, as the league honored the performances of outfielder Kyle Jensen, catcher Miguel Fermin, starting pitcher Jose Alvarez and closer A.J. Ramos.
The quartet will represent the Hammerheads as part of the South Division All-Star Team. The 50th Florida State League All-Star Game will be played at Bright House Field, home of the Clearwater Threshers, on Saturday, June 18, 2011 at 7:05 p.m.
Jensen has already been honored by the league as the first Player of the Week this season, while the entirety of his April was recognized by the Marlins, who named him the organization's Minor League Player of the Month. Despite a trip to the Disabled List after getting hit on the hand by a pitch, Jensen ranks among the league's best in batting average (.331, 7th), home runs (11, t-3rd), total bases (104, 4th) and slugging percentage (.584, 4th).
Jensen was a 12th round pick by the Marlins in the 2009 MLB Draft, coming from St. Mary's College where he was twice named to the All-West Coast Conference First Team. In that season, he picked up a New York-Penn League Player of the Week award, just days before being named to the league's All-Star Team.
Among active catchers with at least 20 games played, Fermin ranks second in the division with a .291 batting average and third with a .734 OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging percentage). Behind the plate, he has yet to make an error, while throwing out 10 of 28 stolen base attempts. He caught all 23 innings of the longest game in Jupiter history, a 2-1 win over Clearwater on May 23rd.
The Samana, Dominican Republic native signed with the Marlins in 2005. This is his third partial season in Jupiter, entering the year with 129 career games behind the plate for the Hammerheads. Prior to that, Fermin batted .347 for Short Season Jamestown in 2008, his first domestic season.
Alvarez approaches the halfway mark as Jupiter's winningest pitcher, going 5-4 with a 3.29 ERA through his start Wednesday. Among Hammerheads starters, the left-hander has allowed the fewest hits per nine innings, while boasting the top strikeout rate. Through May 11th, Alvarez carried a mere 1.85 ERA, the best by a southpaw in the league to that point.
A native of Barcelona, Venezuela, Alvarez originally signed with the Boston Red Sox in 2005, coming to the Marlins as part of a trade for Jeremy Hermida. Last year, his first season in the Marlins organization, Alvarez went 10-3 while splitting time as a starter and reliever at Class-A Greensboro.
Rounding out the Jupiter All-Star selections is closer A.J. Ramos. The right-hander has struck out 26 batters in 17.1 innings, a ratio that would place him second in the league with enough innings to qualify. Ramos has saved nine games for the Hammerheads, allowing just 15 hits while posting a 2.60 ERA. His lone win of the season came in that 23 inning epic on May 23rd, tossing a scoreless final inning as the last pitcher in Jupiter's bullpen.
Ramos was a 21st round pick by the Marlins in 2009 out of Texas Tech University. The Lubbock, Texas native saved 28 games for Class-A Greensboro last season, striking out 78 batters in 58.1 innings.
The quartet of All-Stars finish off a homestand with two more games against the Tampa Yankees at Roger Dean Stadium, with games Thursday and Friday both starting at 6:35 p.m. For more information on the Florida State League All-Star Game, visit FSLbaseball.com.
