Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The Charlotte Stone Crabs scored early and often on their way to a 10-1 win over the Daytona Cubs on Thursday at Charlotte Sports Park.
Mike Sheridan and Greg Sexton teamed up to drive home half of Charlotte's runs. Sheridan supplied his first three-RBI game of the season.
The Stone Crabs got on the board first and never looked back. In the opening frame, Sheridan's two-run single through the right side gave the home team a 2-0 lead.
That was all the run support that Charlotte starter Alex Koronis needed to earn his team-leading fourth win of the season.
Koronis (4-1) tossed six shutout frames, allowing just two hits with six strikeouts. The righty worked ahead the entire night, throwing first pitch strikes to 15 of the 20 batters he faced.
Charlotte added three runs in the third thanks in large part to a pair of Daytona miscues. With the bases loaded, Sheridan grounded to first but Justin Bour's throw home hit Sheridan and bounded away to Cubs pitcher Jeff Antigua. That was followed up by a wild throw to first from Antigua, giving the Stone Crabs a 4-0 lead.
In the sixth, Charlotte put the game out of reach. Daytona reliever Jordan Latham's five walks coupled with a two-run double from Greg Sexton sealed the deal. With that five-run frame, the Stone Crabs' advantage ballooned to ten runs.
Sergio Espinosa allowed a single run to the Cubs in the seventh, snapping an 18 2/3 inning scoreless streak for the Charlotte lefty reliever.
Josh Satow worked a clean ninth inning to give the Stone Crabs a decisive 10-1 victory.
Aaron Kurcz (3-1) took the loss for Daytona, encountering trouble from the outset. The righty surrendered five runs, though just two earned, and lasted just two innings. Kurcz allowed just three hits, but walked four Charlotte batters.
Each of the first three games in this series have involved lopsided decisions. The margin of victory in all three affairs has been no less than seven runs.
The Stone Crabs conclude this series with the Cubs on Friday at Charlotte Sports Park. Rehabbing Rays starter Jeff Niemann (0-0) gets the nod for Charlotte opposite Brett Ebinger (5-2). First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
