Jupiter Hammerheads News Release

Jupiter knocked out 14 hits, but with only one extra-base hit, they left that many on base as well, falling 5-3 to Tampa as their losing skid hit eight games.

The Hammerheads got at least one hit in every inning, with five players recording multi-hit games. But they left the bases loaded in both the 1st and 3rd innings, done in by a lack of timely hitting and a lack of power.

The team's first ten hits were all singles, including three consecutive two-out base hits in the 1st inning. But Miguel Fermin, named to the Florida State League's All-Star team just hours earlier, struck out, the start of an 0-for-4 night in which he left six men on base.

Taylor Krick, Fermin's backup at catcher, made his first start at first base this year and went 4-for-4, scoring the team's first run and plating their last. Ernesto Manzanillo's double in the 8th inning wasn't just the only Jupiter extra-base hit of the night, but also his third hit of the game. Kyle Jensen, also named to the All-Star team, was one of three Hammerheads with a pair of hits. Jose Duarte, who drove in the team's second run, and Jeff Dominguez, who scored the final, also knocked out two singles.

Any one of those performances would have been a welcome sight after the team saw its offense go cold over the last week. But after scoring ten runs in their previous seven games, getting just three on 14 hits soured even the turnaround at the plate.

At first it seemed Tampa would match the Hammerheads' inability to turn hits into runs, as Jupiter starter Edgar Olmos gave up seven hits in his first three innings, but allowed just one run.

After getting the game's first 1-2-3 frame in the 4th, Olmos allowed two walks in the 5th before facing Tampa's lone All-Star representative in Rob Lyerly. The third baseman made Olmos pay, bringing both runners home. The pair pushed Lyerly's RBI total to 44, tying him for the most in the Florida State League.

Down 3-2 in a game in which they seemed on the cusp of breaking open, Jupiter's defense let them down. While the team's fielding surely saved a handful of runs early in the game - the Hammerheads caught runners stealing in the 1st and 3rd innings and Jose Duarte gunned a runner trying to go first-to-third on a single - errors in the 7th and 8th innings led to a pair of unearned runs.

Those gave Tampa the breathing room to escape with the win despite Krick's fourth base hit of the night, scoring Dominguez and bringing the tying run to the plate in the 9th inning. Chase Austin grounded out to end the game, stranding his eighth runner on the night.

Jupiter looks to avoid a second consecutive sweep Friday night, sending their only right-handed starter to the mound. Matt Montgomery faces Tampa's Scottie Allen at 6:35 p.m. at Roger Dean Stadium.
