Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
WATERLOO, Iowa-The USHL's top team flexed its muscles in the third period Saturday night. The Waterloo Black Hawks scored four goals in the game's final period to earn a 7-3 win over the Dubuque Fighting Saints at the Young Arena. With the victory, Waterloo moves into first place in the Prairie Farms Cowbell Cup standings with 14 points.
The game was deadlocked 3-3 heading into the third period. Waterloo pressed the Dubuque goal and Peter Krieger's second goal of the game started the scoring, and turned out to be the eventual game-winning goal. Liam Pecararo fired a pass from behind the net to Krieger who beat Reich blocker side with a quick shot to make it 4-3 at 9:47. Waterloo scored again seconds later as John Wiitala knocked in a loose puck that sat in the slot to make it 5-3.
The Hawks would add a pair of additional goals, with Austin Vieth scoring five-hole at 14:54, and Nick Swaney scoring his first USHL goal on a give-and-go with under a minute remaining to make it 7-3.
A night after a disappointing loss, the Fighting Saints make sure to bring a better effort to open Saturday's game. At one point, the Fighting Saints were outshooting Waterloo 9-1 in the game's opening minutes. Dubuque's hard work paid off only 2:17 into the contest. Dubuque captain Alexx Privitera got the puck along the right wing half boards in the offensive zone. He threw a bad angle shot towards the goal that Waterloo netminder Cameron Johnson stopped, but didn't control. Privitera followed his rebound up, digging at the loose puck. Eric Robinson joined him, and eventually it was Robinson that pushed the puck over the goal line for his 8th tally of the season to make it 1-0 Dubuque.
The Black Hawks would tie the game later on another bad angle shot. Peter Krieger collected the puck out of a scrum on the boards and fired a quick shot to the net. Dubuque goaltender Kevin Reich appeared startled by the shot and surrendered a goal as the puck snuck his arm to tie the game, 1-1 at 13:52.
Dubuque would take the lead in the dying seconds of the first period. Jacob Benson won a race to a loose puck in the corner and dished it to Seamus Malone. He fired a pass back to Josh Elmes who was wide open at the blue line. Elmes walked in front and blasted a slapshot the beat Johnson to make it 2-1 Fighting Saints with less than 30 seconds remaining in the period.
In the second period, Waterloo would turn the tides and take a brief lead. After a Dubuque powerplay failed, Alexx Privitera attempted a pass in neutral ice that was intercepted. The Black Hawks fed a streaking Patrick Russell down the right wing and he skated in alone on Reich. His snapshot beat the Dubuque goaltender over the catching glove to tie the game at two. Kreiger assisted on the goal at 7:43 of the second period.
Waterloo would quickly strike again, scoring a goal three minutes later to make it 3-2. Reich made a toe save on a shot from the right side, but Liam Pecararo got the rebound and threw a puck to the front of the net. It bounced off of Waterloo forward Nick Olczyk in front and skid past Reich to give Waterloo the lead. The goal was reviewed and upheld.
Dubuque pushed back with a late goal to tie the game again. Shane Eiserman collected the puck in the corner and made a nice move to work off the boards. He cut to the middle of the ice, and fed a pass back door to Max McHugh. With Johnson on the right side of the net, McHugh fired home an easy goal for his 17th goal of the year to make it 3-3 at 16:21.
