Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
A four-goal third period at Young Arena Saturday allowed the Waterloo Black Hawks to push past the Dubuque Fighting Saints for a 7-3 victory.
Tied 3-3 coming out of the second intermission, almost half of the final period passed without any scoring before Liam Pecararo set up Peter Krieger's second goal of the night with a pass from behind the Dubuque net. It took just 17 seconds for Waterloo to make it a two-goal cushion with another play starting below the icing line; Blake Winiecki slipped the puck to John Wiitala for a chance from close range.
At 14:54, the Hawks pulled away when Austin Vieth was the beneficiary of a loose puck which came his way in the right wing circle. Vieth snapped a wrister into the net. Affiliate forward Nick Swaney capped the night with under 40 seconds remaining. Rushing up ice, he completed a give-and-go exchange with Tyler Sheehy, making the last touch on a shot flipped under the crossbar.
In the first period, a Waterloo goal was sandwiched between early and late Dubuque tallies, and the Fighting Saints carried a 2-1 lead to intermission. The Hawks' Cameron Johnson made a terrific glove save just 21 seconds into the contest, but Eric Robinson jammed a puck across the goal line at 2:17 when the Waterloo was unable to freeze it at the post to the left of Johnson.
The Saints were responsible for ten of the game's first 11 shots on goal, but the Hawks changed the momentum in the middle stages of the first frame, and Krieger found the net at 13:52, sending a shot across the goal line off of goaltender Kevin Reich. However Dubuque reassumed the lead with less than 30 seconds before intermission; Jacob Benson saved icing, helping to set up a blast by Josh Elmes from the high slot.
In the second, the Black Hawks reversed the first period scoring totals. Following a successful penalty kill at 7:43, Waterloo forced a neutral zone turnover, and Patrick Russell's shot in transition clanked into the net off the post to Reich's left. The Hawks went ahead for the first time less than three minutes later when Nick Olczyk knocked a rebound across the goal line. However, Dubuque rallied for an equalizer at 16:21; Shane Eiserman's cross-slot pass set up Max McHugh with an open side.
The Indiana Ice and Omaha Lancers also won Saturday. As a result, the Hawks maintain a two-point edge on Indiana for first place overall in the USHL and a four-point margin on Omaha for the Western Conference lead.
For the second consecutive weekend, the Hawks finish a strenuous, three-game effort by visiting the Des Moines Buccaneers. Sunday's game in Des Moines begins at 5:05 p.m.
