Long Island Ducks News Release
(Central Islip, N.Y., September 24, 2004) â Long Island Ducks team officials today announced that four players have been named to the 2004 Atlantic League Post Season All-Star Team. First baseman Doug Jennings and outfielder Kimera Bartee joined lefty starter Bill Pulsipher and closer Bill Simas on the squad. Atlantic League general managers were responsible for selecting the winners.
"All four are very deserving of the honor," said Ducks general manager Michael Hirsch. "They have put together exceptional seasons and played a big role in getting us where we are."
Jennings, who finished second in the league MVP voting to Somerset's Victor Rodriguez, was selected after setting team records in batting average (.359), slugging percentage (.612) and on base percentage (.505). In addition, Jennings became the club's all-time leader in RBI on July 16, eclipsing the mark set by former catcher Francisco Morales. For the season, Jennings hit 17 home runs and drove in 84, finishing in the top five in six different offensive categories despite missing almost a month with a shoulder injury.
Bartee earned honors by batting .319 with a team-leading 27 home runs, 88 RBI and 30 stolen bases. The former Detroit Tiger led the Atlantic League with 58 extra-base hits and 103 runs scored, just one short of the club record set by Elvis Pena in 2003. Bartee has now been selected to the AL Post Season All-Star team in each of his two seasons on Long Island.
Pulsipher was named the left-handed pitcher of the Post Season All-Star team after posting a 9-5 mark in 18 appearances (17 starts) for Long Island in 2004. In 115.1 innings of work, Pulsipher struck out 85 batters and walked 34 while ranking fourth in the Atlantic League with a 3.67 ERA. After being signed by the Tacoma Rainiers (AAA, Mariners) of the PCL on August 3, he returned to Long Island on September 3 to help the squad for the playoff run.
The closer of the All-Star team, Simas led the Atlantic League with 17 saves and has been on the mound at the end of each of Long Island's most important contests this season. On August 9, Simas struck out D.J. Boston of Bridgeport to clinch the first playoff berth in team history. The former White Sox closer followed that up by striking out Nashua's Ricardo Cordova on September 23 to send the Ducks into their first Atlantic League Championship Series. Like Pulsipher, Simas returned to Long Island for the playoffs after being inked to a deal by the Rainiers.
