The Newark Bears concluded the 2004 season with a 63-63 record, going 27-36 in the first half of the season and finishing 36-27 in the second half. As a team, the Bears led the Atlantic League in home runs with 159 and ranked second in both runs scored (719) and stolen bases (116). Individually, Keith Maxwell led the league in home runs with 30, Rickey Henderson led the league in walks (96) and finished 3rd in stolen bases (37) and 2nd in on-base percentage (.462), Jerson Perez was ranked 5th in triples (8) and Chris Jones was tied for 8th place in the league's batting race, finishing with a .313 average.
On the pitching side, Newark's pitching staff tossed the 2nd most complete games with 10 and finished with the 5th lowest team ERA (4.79). Individually, right-handers Joe Gannon and Clint Smith closed out 2004 with the 7th and 8th lowest earned run averages (3.90 and 3.97, respectively); and closer Reggie Harris had 15 saves, tied for 3rd most in the Atlantic League.
