D.C. United News Release

CHANTILLY, VA (May 9, 2003) - D.C. United rookies Alecko Eskandarian, David Stokes, Brian Carroll and Doug Warren have been named to the U.S. Under-23 Men's National Team 18-man roster by head coach Glenn "Mooch" Myernick. The U.S. will face Mexico on Wednesday, May 14th in Guadalajara at a time and venue to be determined. The U.S. team will depart for Guadalajara on Sunday afternoon. All four players will miss United's May 14th international friendly against Tottenham Hotspur of England at RFK Stadium. However, all four will be back and available for selection for the May 17th MLS game against Kansas City.

Eskandarian, the top pick in the 2003 MLS SuperDraft, led the U-23's in scoring in 2002, notching seven goals and two assists as the team posted a 6-2-2 overall record. The former University of Virginia star has appeared in two games off the bench for United this year, going scoreless in 37 minutes of action.

Stokes, a central defender, was selected in the first round (fifth overall) of the 2003 SuperDraft. He was an All-ACC and All-America candidate, as well as one of the nation's top defenders while playing and starting in all games, for the last two years, at UNC.

Midfielder Brian Carroll and goalkeeper Doug Warren are the two other D.C. United players featured on Myernick's 18-man roster. Carroll was An All-America candidate and considered as one of the best collegiate players in the nation while playing at Wake Forest. Warren is a promising goalkeeper with a stellar collegiate career at both Clemson and Indiana University. Stokes, Carroll and Warren have yet to appear in an MLS match for United.

The U-23s have gathered just once prior in 2003, posting a 1-1-3 record on a two-week trip to Portugal in January. The U.S. was 1-1-1 in a three-game series against reserve teams from the Portuguese First Division before posting a pair of hard-fought 1-1 draws with Portugal and Russia as part of the Vale de Tejo International Tournament. After beating Russia 4-3 in penalties, the U.S. fell 3-1 in the PK shootout to the host nation to finish second in the four-team tournament.

The U.S. Under-23 MNT will begin qualifying for the 2004 Olympics in November, as they enter the tournament in the second round and will face the winner of a first-round match-up between the tiny nations of St. Kitts & Neves and Dominica, who will meet in a home-and-home series in September and October.
