Indianapolis Indians News Release
OTTAWA, Ontario -- Right-hander Matt Childers worked seven scoreless innings, while center fielder Jason Roberson drilled a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth as Ottawa posted a 4-2 win over Indianapolis Sunday afternoon at Lynx Stadium.
The Lynx improve to 10-8 overall and 7-2 at home, while the Indians fall to 12-9 overall and 6-3 on the road.
Childers (7.0 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 SO), who pitched for the Tribe from 2002-04, improved to 2-1 with the win. He faced only five batters over the minimum and needed just 96 pitches to get through seven frames.
Childers gave way to the Lynx bullpen with a 3-0 lead. RHP Kane Davis (1.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO) got out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth for his second hold of the season, while RHP Yoel Hernandez (1.0 IP) worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his third save of the campaign.
Ottawa cracked the scoreboard when RF Ron Calloway and SS Danny Sandoval came plateward on Roberson's base knock to center in the fifth. Calloway and Sandoval opened the frame with back-to-back singles before Childers moved up both runners with a sacrifice bunt.
The Lynx added an insurance run in the seventh. PH Dusty Wathan reached on a fielding error, advanced to second on Roberson's sacrifice bunt, moved to third on 2B Joe Thurston's infield single and scored on C Jason Jaramillo's sacrifice fly to center.
Indianapolis threatened in the eighth. CF Rajai Davis and SS Brian Bixler opened the inning with base knocks before 1B Yurendell de Caster walked to load the bases. RF Chris Aguila followed with a two-run single to center as Davis and Bixler trotted home. 2B Jose Hernandez walked moments later to load the bases once again, but Ottawa's second hurler induced a 5-4-3 double play to escape with the lead.
Ottawa scored another run in the eighth to provide the final margin of victory.
De Caster, who finished the afternoon 1-for-3 with a walk, extended his team-best hitting streak to 11 contests. Davis went 2-for-4 with a run and has now reached base safely in 18 consecutive affairs, while Bixler went 1-for-4 with a score and has now hit safely in six straight contests.
Indians LHP Sean Burnett (7.0 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO) was pinned with the loss and has now dropped back-to-back decisions after winning his first three of 2007.
LF Lou Collier paced Ottawa with a 3-for-4 effort, while 3B Brennan King also recorded a pair of base knocks.
Five Lynx players -- Kane (2000), Collier (2000-01), Childers (2002-04), Chris Coste (2001) and Jim Rushford (2002-03) -- spent time in Indianapolis as Milwaukee Brewer farmhands.
The two clubs wrap up their four-game series on Monday at 1:05 p.m. RHP Bryan Bullington is scheduled to start for Indianapolis, while LHP Brian Mazone is expected to get the nod for Ottawa.
The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com as Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley call all the action. The pre-game show begins at 12:45 p.m.
Monday's tilt will be Indianapolis' last at Lynx Stadium. The Ottawa franchise will be moved to Allentown, Pa., after the 2007 season.
