
Braves Sweep Tides

Richmond, VA - The Richmond Braves drilled the Norfolk Tides 11-0 Sunday at The Diamond. The Braves erupted for seven runs in the fifth inning to earn their fifth straight win and sweep a four game series from the Tides.
Richmond pushed a run across in the fourth to take a 1-0 lead. Yunel Escobar reached on a bunt single, sole a base, and scored on a ground out. The Braves sent 12 men up in the fifth to blow the game open. Gregor Blanco smashed a grand slam, the first hit of the inning, to give the Braves a 5-0 lead. Barbaro Canizares laced a three-run double, the only other hit of the inning, to make it 8-0. Richmond took full advantage of three hit batters, two walks, and an error in the fifth. Doug Clark doubled a run home in the sixth. Wes Timmons knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh. T.J. Bohn's RBI single in the eighth capped the scoring. Meanwhile Jonathan Johnson tossed seven scoreless innings to stretch a string of Braves starters not permitting an earned run to 29 innings.
Johnson earned the win. Will Startup and Manny Acosta each worked a scoreless inning as the Braves earned their second shutout of the year. Andy Mitchell took the loss. Yunel Escobar had two hits for the Braves. Brandon Fahey had two hits for the Tides.
The Braves are off Monday. They continue an eight game homestand Tuesday vs. Charlotte at 7 PM. Buddy Carlyle will pitch for the Braves against Gavin Floyd.
