Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release
A familiar hockey face is returning to Pensacola: the Ice Flyers have signed former Ice Pilot Mike Tuomi. Tuomi played for the Pensacola Ice Pilots in the 2007-2008 season.
Last season Tuomi played for Fayetteville, putting up four goals and two assists in 14 games and racking up 37 penalty minutes for the SPHL runner-up. In 2006-2007 Tuomi broke into the SPHL and had a great year with Knoxville, putting up 74 points including 31 goals. The 5-11, 195 pound Tuomi should add some fire power to an already potent Pensacola offense.
"Mike's played a lot of pro games and should give us some veteran leadership," Ice Flyers coach Todd Gordon said. "He should help us on our power play once he gets up to date on all the systems."
Tuomi certainly has experience, having played at a high level since 2001 with the Aurora Tigers of the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League. Tuomi's background is not lost on Coach Gordon: "[Tuomi] played for the Pilots in the East Coast League before. He played in the Central League and always had good numbers... [he] should be a good presence for us."
After starting the 2007-2008 season with the Ice Pilots, Tuomi moved to the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees and racked up the points: in 45 games with Rio Grande, Tuomi amassed 11 goals and 13 assists to total 24 points. Tuomi also served 37 penalty minutes during that time.
Mike Tuomi joined the Ice Flyers on the road against Fayetteville this past weekend, firing three shots at the FireAntz' goalie on Friday night and two more a day later. Tuomi and the Ice Flyers return home this Friday and Saturday, November 27 and 28 to host the Mississippi Surge and Louisiana IceGators respectively at 7:05 p.m. Both games are part of Military Appreciation Weekend; fans with a military I.D. can receive $2 off a regularly priced admission ticket.
