Edmonton Elks News Release
(Edmonton) The Edmonton Eskimos are saddened by the passing late Monday of former Eskimo offensive lineman Bill Stevenson.
Stevenson played 14 seasons for the Green and Gold from 1975-1988. He started his career with the Eskimos as a defensive lineman, but played both guard and tackle for the Five-in-a-Row Grey Cup victories. He was a three-time West Division All-Star (1978, 1979, 1981) and a two-time CFL All-Pro (1979, 1981). He also won seven Grey Cups (1975, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1987).
"My best memories of Bill are as a big O-lineman with extraordinary athletic ability," says his former Eskimo coach Hugh Campbell. "In the off-season he was one of our better players on the Eskimo basketball team. He was a good teammate and an important part of a very good football team."
Bill grew up in Edmonton and attended Jasper Place High School where he played football and basketball where he was coached by former Eskimo great, Johnny Bright. He played his college ball at Drake University and was drafted by the NFL's Miami Dolphins in 1974 before joining the Memphis Southmen of the World Football League for the 1974 and 1975 seasons.
The Edmonton Eskimo Football Club is one of the most successful teams in CFL history with 13 Grey Cup championships and a North American pro-sports record of 34 consecutive years in the playoffs. A community-owned team, the Eskimos pride themselves on giving back to the community that has supported the organization throughout its illustrious history.
