Lincoln Saltdogs News Release
LINCOLN, NE - The Lincoln Saltdogs announced the signing of infielder Omar Obregon today. The organization also traded outfielder Michael Hart to the Sioux Falls Canaries for players to be named later.
Obregon comes to the capital city after spending parts of seven seasons with the Braves organization. The 24-year-old owns a career batting average of .266 with 52 extra-base hits and 127 RBIs while reaching as high as Double-A Mississippi last year. He hit .320 with two doubles in his eight games at Double-A.
The switch-hitter's best season came with Rookie-League Danville in in 2014. He hit .297 with seven extra-base hits and 20 RBIs over 58 games. He worked a .384 OBP while swiping five bases.
Obregon's speed and defense could be big assets to the Saltdogs. He stole 31 bases in Single-A in 2015 and has 61 thefts in his career. He is regarded as an excellent middle infield and has a career fielding percentage of .978 at second base.
Obregon is from La Trinidad, Nicaragua and plays for his country's national team. He was 2-6 with two RBIs in the 2016 World Baseball Classic qualifying tournament.
Hart was acquired in a trade with Sioux Falls on May 16th that sent LHP Cesilio Pimentel to the Canaries. He played in all five games and was 3-11 with three runs scored and three walks. Hart is in his first professional season after playing his college ball at UMass.
The Saltdogs continue their three-game series against the Wichita Wingnuts tonight at Haymarket Park. First pitch is at 6:45 PM with coverage beginning at 6:15 PM on ESPN 101.5 FM 1480 AM and saltdogs.com/stream.
