Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Bridgeport, Conn. - May 14, 2013) - The Bridgeport Bluefish today announced the additions of infielders Russ Mitchell and Sam Greenberg, along with pitcher Mickey Jannis.
"Russ is an all-around player that adds a powerful bat to our lineup and a great glove to our infield," says Bluefish manager Willie Upshaw. "We also look forward to Mickey's contributions to the pitching staff and having Sam back with the club."
Mitchell joins the Bluefish for his first season in the Atlantic League and 11th of professional baseball. The former Major Leaguer played last season in Double-A, appearing in 47 games with San Francisco farm hand Richmond and 24 games with Miami's Jacksonville. The 28-year-old has spent parts of two seasons in the Major Leagues, both with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was a 15th round pick of the Dodgers in the 2003 amateur draft. After hitting .315 with 38 doubles and 23 homeruns with Triple-A Albuquerque, the infielder got the call from the Majors and finished the season with Los Angeles. In total, Russ has played in 40 games in the MLB and has hit four career homeruns. In 1,028 career minor league games, Mitchell owns a .263 batting average with 126 home runs, 590 RBI and 589 runs scored. The corner infielder also holds a career fielding percentage of .992 at first base and .946 at third.
Jannis comes to Bridgeport and the Atlantic League in his fourth season of professional baseball after being acquired from Lake Erie of the Frontier League for a player to be named later. He spent the 2012 campaign with Lake Erie, and over the course of 74.2 innings, he ended with an ERA of 2.53 in 34 total games (three starts). The 25-year-old was selected out California State University of Bakersfield by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 44th round of the 2010 June draft. The righty has been working on perfecting the knuckle ball; and over the course of three seasons he has totaled eight wins while holding a 2.79 ERA and reaching as high as High-A with Charlotte in 2011.
Greenberg returns to the club after being signed by the Bluefish early this season. He appeared in three games for the 'Fish and scored the game winning run on May 9 against the Camden Riversharks after he drew a walk in his first professional plate appearance. Sam is the brother of teammate Adam Greenberg.
In corresponding roster moves, the Bluefish have released pitchers Josh Schmidt and Edward Rodriguez, and infielder Daniel Barbero.
The Bridgeport Bluefish are members of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball and play their home games at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. For further information, call 203-210-BLUE (2583) or visit the brand new BridgeportBluefish.com.
