Cape Breton Eagles News Release
SYDNEY- The Cape Breton Eagles late push came up empty in a 4-2 loss to the Val-d'Or Foreurs on Pink at the Rink at Centre 200.
The opening period would prove to be the difference as the Foreurs skated to a 3-1 lead after the opening stanza, with some offense coming from the blueline. Defenseman Tomas Cibulka lifted a shot over Oliver Satny to give the visitors a lead, then it was countered when Luke Patterson finished a pass from Carter McCluskey.
Then defenseman Kale McCallum put the Foreurs ahead with a power play marker, blasting a one timer by Satny. The next goal was also a by-product of special teams, as with the teams playing four on four, as Justin Robidas came in an on a breakway and put it through the legs of Satny.
The Eagles didn't take long in the second period to make the game closer- beginning the middle stanza on the man advantage with Samuel Johnson finishing a pass from Cam Squires in the opening minute. But less than two minutes later, Nathan Bolduc skated down the left wing and flipped a shot over Satny to restore the two goal edge.
Late in the period the Eagles were dealt a big blow as William Shields was sent off for five minutes, with a game misconduct for slewfooting. The Eagles were able to kill it off- in part due to David Doucet taking his own minor for high sticking.
In the third period the Eagles outshot the Foreurs 16-7, but couldn't get any closer on the scoreboard. Penalty trouble cost the Eagles in the end of the period, with Cam Squires and Olivier Houde taking back to back penalties in the final minutes (including an overlap with a ten second 5 on 3.)
As the Houde penalty came to an end, Satny raced to the bench for an extra attacker and the Eagles swarmed the Val-d'Or net, including Charles Boutin hitting a post. The Foreurs wrapped up a 4-2 victory.
Mathys Fernandez picked up the win, stopping 31 of 33 shots. Satny took the loss, stopping 28 of 32.
Affiliate players McCluskey and Olivier St-Louis remained with the Eagles, while Étienne Desjardins also suited up for the Eagles to make his QMJHL debut. The 16 year old Desjardins was drafted in the third round by the Eagles in 2022.
The Eagles will now hit the road for their first Quebec road trip of the season, beginning with Thursday in Victoriaville against the Tigers. Puck drop is 8 PM Atlantic time.
