San Antonio Missions News Release
SAN ANTONIO - After beginning the season 0-7 at home, San Antonio had a chance to record back-to-back home wins. The Flying Chanclas had to work out of a ninth inning bases loaded jam but the pitching staff did its job by pitching a combined shutout. A fourth inning sacrifice fly from Agustin Ruiz was enough run support for the Flying Chanclas.
After a scoreless first inning, the Flying Chanclas de San Antonio broke the tie in the bottom of the second inning. Facing Springfield starter Kyle Leahy, Korry Howell legged out a triple to get the inning started. He quickly came around to score after Agustin Ruiz drove him in with a sacrifice fly. His seventh RBI of the season gave the Chanclas an early 1-0 lead.
The Flying Chanclas found themselves with a great opportunity to improve their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Howell began the inning by drawing a walk. Agustin Ruiz moved him to third base after hitting a single to right field. With runners on the corners and no outs, Jorge Ona struck out looking. Connor Hollis bunted and advanced Ruiz into scoring position. San Antonio ended up stranding their baserunners after Chandler Seagle struck out swinging.
Matt Waldron was the starting pitcher for the Flying Chanclas. He was nearly unhittable through the beginning of his outing after he allowed two hits in the first inning. Waldron cruised through the second, third, and fourth innings and racked up seven strikeouts along the way. His control became an issue in the fifth inning as he allowed a base hit and a walk. After a mound visit from Pete Zamora, Waldron bounced back to strand the runners and keep it a 1-0 Chanclas lead.
Waldron was replaced by Tom Cosgrove before the sixth inning. The 29th ranked prospect recorded his first win of the season after pitching five shutout innings. He allowed three walks, three hits, and struck out seven batters. Waldron finished the night one shy of tying his career high in strikeouts.
Tom Cosgrove pitched a scoreless sixth inning while Carlos Belen pitched two shutout innings in the seventh and eighth innings. Kevin Kopps came in to pitch an eventful ninth inning.
Kopps allowed a lead-off walk to Moises Gomez. With Pedro Pages at the plate, Kopps threw a slider in the dirt which the home plate umpire ruled was a foul ball. Upon that call, catcher Chandler Seagle was ejected for arguing the decision. Manager Phillip Wellman was subsequently tossed as well. Juan Fernandez replaced Seagle behind the plate. During the same at-bat, hitting coach Raul Padron was tossed for arguing balls and strikes. This was just the beginning of the ninth inning excitement.
Pages eventually drew a walk and was replaced by Jonah Davis at first base. A wild pitch from Kopps moved both runners into scoring position. After a Malcom Nunez ground out, Chandler Redmond was intentionally walked to load the bases with just one out. Kopps struck out the next batter and recorded a fielder's choice to end the game and clinch the victory.
