Florida Panthers Reassign Matthias To Rochester

(Rochester, NY)... Florida Panthers General Manager Jacques Martin announced today that the team has assigned C Shawn Matthias to the Rochester Americans (AHL). In addition, the club has activated RW David Booth, RW Radek Dvorak and C Stephen Weiss from the injured reserve.

Matthias, 20, appeared in five preseason games with the Panthers scoring one goal with one assist and four PIM. The Mississauga, Ontario, native made his NHL debut last year with Florida, playing in four games scoring two goals.

The Florida Panthers open up their 2008-09 season tomorrow when they head to Raleigh to take on their Southeast Division rival Carolina Hurricanes. On Saturday, the Panthers will host the Atlanta Thrashers at 7 p.m. in the club's home opener. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling (954) 835-PUCK.

Rochester Americans General Manager Jody Gage will be a guest tonight on the Bob Matthews show, starting tonight at 6:30 p.m. on 1180 WHAM. Gage will discuss hockey and preview the events leading up to Rochester's 2008-09 American Hockey League opener against the Syracuse Crunch on Friday, October 10th at The Blue Cross Arena.

The Amerks will open their 53rd AHL season at The Blue Cross Arena at the War Memorial against the Syracuse Crunch on Friday, October 10th. Faceoff is set for 7:35 p.m. Gates will open at 6:30 p.m. On Opening Night, fans will enjoy one of the most exciting openers in the history of the franchise, as the organization provides pregame entertainment, LIVE music, free autographs, kids' events and the largest bobblehead giveaway in team history.

Opening Night will start with a bang as Shane Yellowbird and The Skycoasters perform FREE concerts outside the arena to kick off the Block Party. The Skycoasters will play from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. and will be followed by country music recording artist Shane Yellowbird from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m.

As part of the Block Party, kids and adults will also get to meet area mascots, face painters, clowns and famous Amerks alumni as Jody Gage, Dick Gamble, Doug Gibson, Stan Jonathan and Geordie Robertson to name a few. Further, fans will be able to jump around in the bounce house and get their first look at the Amerks' dance team, "The American Spirit".

Upon entering the arena, the first 10,000 people will take home a Rory Fitzpatrick bobblehead. There are also chances to ride around in bumper boats during the second intermission and to take part in all of the exciting promotions throughout the game.
