Flashback: Chicago Firecrackers

New York City FC News Release

New York City Football Club are back in MLS action on Saturday.

Matchday Two sees Nick Cushing's side travel to Chicago Fire in an 8:30pm ET kick-off at Soldier Field.

Ahead of the clash, we Flashback to three memorable victories in Illinois...

Gabby's Golazo

What. A. Goal!

Gabriel Pereira was the star man at SeatGeek Stadium in August 2022, netting a sensational strike to send City on our way to an impressive triumph with a superb long-range rocket.

Collecting Santiago Rodríguez's pass 25 yards out, Pereira took a touch before unleashing an unstoppable effort into the top corner. As the commentators remarked at the time, goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina was helpless to stop it.

It was a moment of magic, and one that steered the Boys in Blue back to winning ways, with Rodríguez adding a second a minute after the restart, following some excellent high pressing from Pereira.

The Brazilian was on fire in Chicago to ignite the victory, and unsurprisingly his screamer would go on to deservedly scoop the Etihad Goal of the Month award.

Decision Day Drama

A seven-goal thriller...

The final day of the disrupted 2020 campaign yielded plenty of drama, as City edged an entertaining encounter at Soldier Field.

Taty Castellanos bagged the winning goal with 13 minutes of normal time remaining, completing the scoring in a topsy-turvy contest in which six first-half goals were scored.

The Boys in Blue stormed into a two-goal lead just after the half-hour, thanks to goals from Alex Callens and Gary Mackay-Steven, and restored the cushion through Jesús Medina after Robert Berić had halved the deficit.

Przemysław Frankowski's quick fire brace drew the hosts level before half-time however, sending the two sides into the break with three goals apiece.

In contrast, the second period proved a tighly-contested affair. The decisive goal arrived courtesy of a stroke of good fortune, as Castellanos latched onto Miguel Navarro's loose defensive pass and finished coolly to ensure the Boys in Blue entered our fifth playoff campaign on a hot streak of four successive wins.

Fire Starter

Another rollercoaster ride in the 2016 season opener...

The new campaign marked a new era for the Club with a new man at the helm in former Premier League star and World Cup winner Patrick Vieira - and the Frenchman would begin his tenure with a bang.

City's first goal of the year would arrive after just ten minutes, as Tommy McNamara curled a glorious effort beyond Matt Lampson to break the deadlock.

The lead would last for just nine minutes with Răzvan CociÈ™ leveling for the home side, but a Tony Taylor strike restored the advantage before Khiry Shelton handed the visitors a two-goal cushion to take into the break.

Kennedy Igboananike clawed Chicago back into the contest just four minutes after the restart, though it proved short-lived once again when Mix Diskerud volleyed home to make it 4-2.

There was more drama to come when David Accam converted from the penalty spot, but City hung on to secure a winning start for Vieira, who would guide the Boys in Blue to a first playoff place in a memorable campaign for the Club.
