Timbers Shut out Sporting Kansas City 1-0 in Season Opener at Providence Park

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers opened their 13th MLS season with a 1-0 win against Sporting Kansas City at Providence Park on Monday night. Juan David Mosquera scored Portland's first goal of the season and lone goal of the night early in the first half to seal the victory at home.

The Timbers kicked off their 13th MLS season tonight at Providence Park. Portland is 7-2-4 in its 13 MLS era home openers. Juan David Mosquera registered his first career goal with the Timbers at the 5:31 mark, recording the fastest goal scored in MLS thus far this season. Yimmi Chara earned the assist, tallying his 25th career assist for Portland, which is the fifth most in club history. Notably, tonight's goal was Portland's 600th in the MLS era. Evander made his MLS debut, starting the match for the Timbers.

POR - Juan David Mosquera (Yimmi Chara), 6th minute: Chasing the ball down the right-side endline, Juan David Mosquera poked the ball away from a Sporting Kansas City defender to find Yimmi Chara, who took a touch inside of the 18-yard box and slipped a pass towards the six-yard box for Mosquera. Spinning with the ball to face the goal, Mosquera megged Kansas City goalkeeper John Pulskamp to find the back of the net.
