The Flames grabbed a 2-0 lead on a pair of first period goals by David Van der Gulik. The first tally came on the power play as Van der Gulik swatted home a rebound following a shot by Brett Sutter. Carsen Germyn earned the secondary assist to move into first on the Flames All-Time Point Scoring List. It was Germyn's 74th point (21 goals and 53 assists) as a Flame, one better than Grant Stevenson. With the tally, Van der Gulik moved into a tie for first on the Flames All-Time Goal Scoring List. He moved into sole possession of first on the list just nine minutes later when he scored at even strength. It was the 31st goal of Van der Gulik's Quad City career as he surpassed Grant Stevenson and Krys Kolanos, who both recorded 30 goals as Flames in 2007-08. Brett Sutter earned the lone helper on the second tally. The Flames closed the historic first period with a 2-0 lead.
The Flames extended their lead to 3-0 on a power-play goal by Germyn just 65 seconds into the middle period. The tally was scored on a point shot by the Flames forward. The Admirals knotched their first goal of the night at 4:33 of the second frame when Alexander Sulzer scored on a blast from the left wing circle. Quad City re-established their three goal lead at 12:49 of the second when Brett Palin scored on a shot from the slot to put the Flames in front 4-1. The Flames held on to that lead for the remainder of the second period.
After skating scoreless through the first 17:29 of the third period, the Admirals pulled to within two goals on a tally by Nolan Yonkman. With time dwindling Milwaukee pulled their goaltender in favor of the sixth attacker. Brett Sutter scored into the empty net to secure the victory for the Flames by a final of 5-2.
The Flames are back in Milwaukee for a re-match with the Admirals at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday night. The game can be heard on 93.9 FM WYEC and qcflames.com beginning at 6:35 p.m. with The Hayman's Ace Hardware Pre-Game Show. Fans can also watch the game for just $6.00 via ahllive.com.
