Last Week's Games
Wednesday, March 25th - Chicago Wolves 4 at Quad City Flames 5 OT
Kyle Greentree scored twice as the Flames downed Chicago 5-4 in overtime on Wednesday night at the i wireless Center. Greentree scored the game-winning tally with just 25 seconds left in the extra session. The pair of goals pulls Greentree into a tie for first on the Flames All-Time Goal Scoring List at 35. The Flames also generated a team record 47 shots on goal, and need every one of them, as they improved to 29-30-6-6. In addition to Greentree's markers, Carsen Germyn, Kris Chuko and Brandon Roach scored. Chicago nabbed a 2-0 first period lead on a goal by Matt Anderson at 1:01 of the frame and a tally by Riley Holzapfel at 11:49. The Wolves built the lead while being dominating positional by a Flames team that could not beat Ondrej Pavelec early. Back-to-back Quad City power plays in the first half of the period yielded several quality chances but no goals. Carsen Germyn finally broke through with 1:55 left in the period. Germyn scored on the rebound following a shot by Kris Chucko. The Flames skated off after 20 minutes trailing 2-1 despite outshooting the Wolves 20-8 in the first period. In the second period, specialty teams took center stage as each team converted on the power play and also allowed a shorthanded goal. The craziness began at 3:10 of the middle frame when Kyle Greentree scored on the power play to tie the game at two. It was the 34th goal of the year for Greentree, which extended his franchise record for goals in a single season. Steve Martins put the Wolves back in front with a shorthanded goal at 5:44 of the middle period. He scored on a shot from the right wing wall that eluded the grasp of Flames netminder Leland Irving. Quad City answered back with a shorthanded goal of their own at 14:29 of the period. Kris Chucko scored while the Flames were down a man. It was the 23rd goal of the season for Chucko and it tied the game at three. The Wolves re-took the lead late in the middle period as Spencer Machacek scored on the man advantage to put his team ahead 4-3 after 40 minutes. In the third period, the lone tally was netted by Brandon Roach during a delayed penalty. The goal was scored on a point shot and came with just 1:56 left in regulation. The dramatic tally set up an overtime session that was controlled by Quad City. Kyle Greentree netted his second goal of the night, and his 35th tally of the year, with just 25 seconds left in the overtime to earn Quad City the win.
Friday, March 27th - Iowa Chops 0 at Quad City Flames 2
Leland Irving stopped 26 shots en route to his first professional shutout in a 2-0 Quad City win over Iowa on Friday at the i wireless Center. Kris Chucko and Cam Cunning supplied the offense in the win as the Flames returned to the .500 mark at 30-30-6-6. The teams skated scoreless through the opening 20 minutes. Flames goalie Leland Irving made 11 saves including a stop on an Eric Boguniecki breakaway. Iowa netminder David LeNeveu responded with a dozen saves. LeNeveu also stopped a breakaway as he denied Kris Chucko in the game's first minute. After 36:51 of scoreless hockey, Kris Chucko broke through with 3:09 left in the middle period. Chucko scored on the rebound after LeNeveu had stopped Brandon Roach on a wraparound attempt. The tally held up as the only goal of the middle period, and the Flames held a 1-0 lead after 40 minutes. In the third period, Cam Cunning added an insurance goal while Irving turned aside four shots to cap his first shutout.
Saturday, March 28th - Quad City Flames 2 at Chicago Wolves 3 SO
The Flames earned a regulation point in a hard-fought 3-2 shootout loss to Chicago on Saturday at Allstate Arena. Carsen Germyn and Cam Cunning scored the goals for Quad City with Cunning's third period marker forcing the extra session. Carsen Germyn netted the lone goal of the opening period when he sent home a rocket on a one-timer following a feed from Kyle Greentree. The tally stood up as Leland Irving stopped all eight Chicago shots he saw in the opening period. The Wolves took the lead on a pair of second period markers. Brett Sterling set up Matt Anderson for the Wolves first tally on a shot from the left wing circle. Chicago moved in front eleven minutes later when Sterling fed Joey Crabb, who snuck the puck past Irving for his 15th goal of the year. The Wolves skated off with a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes of play. Cam Cunning forced the extra session when he scored the only goal of the third period at 4:43 of the closing frame. After John Vigilante's 2-on-1 chance was kicked aside by Ondrej Pavelec, Cunning scooped up the rebound and scored his fifth goal of the year to tie the game at two. After a scoreless overtime, the teams headed to a shootout. Through the first five shooters, the contest was tied at one on goals by Quad City's Justin Bowers and Chicago's Joey Motzko. In the sixth round, Bowers and Motzko again traded goals to force a seventh frame. After both goaltenders held serve, Chicago's Brett Skinner scored in the top of the eighth round. Pavelec denied Vigilante in the bottom of the round to secure the win for Chicago.
Sunday, March 29th - Quad City Flames 3 at Iowa Chops 2 SO
The Flames earned a crucial 3-2 shootout win over Iowa on Sunday evening at Wells Fargo Arena. David Van der Gulik and Kyle Greentree supplied the regulation offense while Leland Irving turned aside 21 shots in earning his 20th win of 2008-09. With the victory, the rookie netminder tied franchise records for goaltender wins in a season and all-time goaltender victories. Quad City's David Van der Gulik scored the only goal of the opening frame when he tipped home a Brad Farynuk point shot at 11:39 of the period. It was Van der Gulik's 17th goal of the season, and it put Quad City in front 1-0 after 20 minutes. The Flames extended their lead to 2-0 when Kyle Greentree scored shorthanded at 5:40 of the second period. Greentree tipped the puck past Iowa's Petri Kontiola, recovered the loose biscuit and charged the front of the Iowa net. Greentree beat Iowa netminder David LeNeveu for his 36th goal of the year, and his first shorthanded tally. The Flames skated scoreless through the remainder of the period and carried a 2-0 lead into the third period. Iowa scored twice in the third period to force the extra session. Petri Kontiola scored his 18th goal on a feed from T.J. Trevelyan at 7:01 of the final period. Trevelyan netted a shorthanded goal with just 2:40 left in regulation to tie the game at two. After skating scoreless through the remainder of regulation and the five minute overtime, the teams headed to a shootout. Both of the Flames first two shooters scored as Kris Chucko and David Van der Gulik converted. After Matt Beleskey scored in the bottom of the second round to pull the Chops to within a single goal, the goaltenders denied all third and fourth round shooters. Kyle Greentree converted in the top of the fifth round to secure the win for Quad City.
