Giroux Nets Record 54th Goal Saturday Night
March 31, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Hershey Bears News Release
The HERSHEY BEARS Hockey Club won three of four games last week to take a five-point lead in the East Division with two weeks remaining in the 2008-09 regular season.
HERSHEY begins a four-game road trip this week to Norfolk, Bridgeport, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Philadelphia before returning home for the final weekend of the season against the Phantoms and Penguins. Tickets are available at the GIANT Center box office, or by calling (717) 534-3911.
No one has done it better: With two goals Saturday night in a 7-2 win over Bridgeport, left wing Alexandre Giroux set a new franchise record for most goals by a HERSHEY BEARS player in a single season. Giroux tied Tony Cassolato's mark of 53 goals with a short-handed tally at the 12:44 mark of the second period. Not even five minutes later, Giroux made the record his own with a power play marker at 17:16 of the middle period. Cassolato's record had stood for 26 years before Giroux snapped it Saturday night. The Quebec City native still has six regular season games remaining to up the ante in HERSHEY'S record book.
Aucoin closes in on 100: Lost in the shadows of linemate Alexandre Giroux's pursuit of HERSHEY'S goal scoring record, Keith Aucoin is poised to become the first BEARS player since Christian Matte (104 in 1999-2000) to collect 100 or more points in a single season. With a five-point effort against Bridgeport Saturday, Aucoin has 94 points with six games remaining in the regular season. The Waltham, MA native has led the American Hockey League in scoring since a five-point effort on opening night in Wilkes- Barre/Scranton back on October 8.
Mink magic: Right wing Graham Mink established a new career high in goals Saturday night, scoring his 32nd of the season against Bridgeport. Mink suffered a hand injury later in the game, and is expected to be lost for the remainder of the regular season.
Washington update: Goaltender Simeon Varlamov, who started back-to-back games for HERSHEY this past weekend against Bridgeport and Wilkes- Barre/Scranton, was recalled to Washington Monday. The Capitals return to action Wednesday at home against the New York Islanders.
