Five Spikes Selected for 2016 Nypl All-Star Game

*(**STATE COLLEGE, PA) *- The State College Spikes will send five players to the 2016 New York-Penn League All-Star Game on Tuesday, August 16 at Dutchess Stadium in Wappingers Falls, NY. Infielders *Tommy Edman*, *Elier Rodriguez *and *Danny Hudzina *will join catcher *Jeremy Martinez *and relief pitcher *Eric Carter *on the North squad for the NYPL's annual showcase of future stars.

The quintet of Spikes matches a franchise record for most players selected for the NYPL All-Star Game. This is the third time in the last four seasons that State College has had five players selected for the league's Midsummer Classic.

The NYPL All-Star Game is set to return to Dutchess Stadium, the home of the Hudson Valley Renegades, for the second time. Dutchess Stadium also hosted the All-Star Game in 2007.

Edman, the Cardinals' 2016 sixth-round draft choice out of Stanford, is leading the NYPL in runs scored with 39 through August 8. The San Diego, CA native also holds the fourth-best batting on-base percentage in the league as of August 8 with a .404 mark. Edman is batting .288 with four home runs, second-most on the Spikes, and 22 runs batted in through his first 40 professional games.

Rodriguez, the Cardinals' 2013 11th-round draft choice, has delivered a clutch bat for the Spikes, hitting .312 with seven doubles, two homers and 20 runs batted in through 29 games. The Miami, FL native has also hit .375 with runners in scoring position this year, and has collected 10 multi-hit games in 2016.

Hudzina was selected by the Cardinals in the 10th round of the 2016 draft. The Western Kentucky product shook off a 1-for-24 start at the plate to post a .342 batting average in the month of July. For the season, Hudzina is hitting .262 with eight doubles, two homers and 14 runs batted in through 36 games as of August 8.

Martinez, the Cardinals' fourth-round draft choice in 2016 out of USC, has hit .312 with eight doubles and 18 runs batted in over his first 34 professional games. The rookie backstop has also provided guidance for a pitching staff that ranks fourth in the New York-Penn League with a 3.02 ERA through August 8. Martinez also produced his first professional home run, a three-run inside-the-park round-tripper, on August 7 at Vermont.

Carter has been a linchpin in the late innings for the Spikes this season. The 2016 26th-round draft choice of the Cardinals out of Louisiana-Lafayette has gone 5-for-5 in save opportunities, and has posted a 2-0 record with a 1.38 ERA over his first 11 professional appearances. Carter, a native of Santa Clara, UT, has struck out 18 batters and walked just three over 13 innings.

The quintet of Spikes will join players from Aberdeen, Brooklyn, Mahoning Valley, Staten Island, West Virginia and Williamsport on the South team. Players from Auburn, Batavia, Connecticut, Hudson Valley, Lowell, Tri-City and Vermont will form the North squad for the event.

Fans can catch the Spikes' All-Stars in action when they return home to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for a six-game homestand starting on Tuesday.
