Williamsport Defeats West Virginia 3-0

GRANVILLE, W.Va. - Black Bears' starter RHP Luis Escobar shut down Williamsport but West Virginia's bats quieted in a 3-0 loss to the Crosscutters on Monday night from Monongalia County Ballpark. Escobar fell to 3-4 in a quality outing tossing six innings, allowing just two earned runs on seven hits with six strikeouts.

Williamsport grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as DH Luis Encarnacion, who led off the inning with a double, came in to score on a 6-4-3 double play. After Escobar tossed the next three innings scoreless, Crosscutters' 1B Darick Hall launched a solo home run over the right field wall to provide Williamsport with a 2-0 lead.

Reliever RHP Matt Frawley entered for Escobar in the seventh and didn't allow an earned run through two innings while striking out four. Williamsport extended their advantage to 3-0 in the seventh as an RBI single from C Henri Lartigue scored LF Jesus Alastre, who singled.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, West Virginia threatened as the Black Bears brought the tying run to the plate after singles from 1B Albert Baur and DH Will Craig. But, West Virginia was retired by reliever RHP Carlos Indriago who earned his first save of the year throwing the frame scoreless.

For the Black Bears, 3B Nick King, 2B Kevin Mahala and Baur each had two hits to pace the offense, which was outhit 10-8 by the Crosscutters. Williamsport SS Chandler Hall, 1B Darick Hall and Alastre had two hits apiece as starter RHP Felix Paulino logged his first win of the year hurling seven scoreless innings while surrendering five hits with four strikeouts. Craig extended his hitting streak to 16 games.

West Virginia (22-28) will begin a six-game road trip tomorrow night as they take on the State College Spikes (35-15) at 7:05 PM from Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
