Winston-Salem Dash News Release

SALEM, VA (JULY 15, 2010) - Winston-Salem scored five runs in the sixth inning to blow open a close game and the Dash held off a pair of late Red Sox rallies to defeat Salem 9-6 on Thursday night at Lewis-Gale Field. Four Dash players had multi-hit games as Kyle Shelton and Brandon Short had three each to lead Winston to the win.

Salem (9-11, 51-39) scored an unearned run in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. Dan Butler reached third base on an error by Jordan Cheatham and scored on a groundout by Drew Hedman to put the Red Sox in front.

The Dash (12-8, 55-35) leveled the contest in the top of the third when Shelton doubled and later scored on Drew Garcia's RBI sacrifice fly.

Winston-Salem took the lead for good in the fifth inning against Salem starter Caleb Clay (3-8). Cheatham led off with a double and Shelton followed with a single to put men on the corners with nobody out. Mike Richard bounced into a 6-4-3 double play, scoring Cheatham from third and clearing the bases. Short followed with a double and scored on Garcia's RBI single to make it 3-1 Dash.

The Red Sox got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning on Tim Federowicz' RBI single to cut the deficit to one.

Clay ran into more trouble in the fifth. After striking out Seth Loman to begin the inning, Jose Martinez and Luis Sierra singled. Salem manager Kevin Boles then called upon lefty reliever Cesar Cabral to get out of the frame. He got Cheatham to force Sierra out at second on a grounder to the shortstop, putting men at the corners with two outs.

Shelton provided a clutch RBI single to right field, doubling Winston's lead. A wild pitch scored Cheatham from third base and Richard followed with an RBI single to left. Already a three-run inning, the Dash got two more when Short hit a two-run home run over the left field fence to give Winston-Salem an 8-2 lead. It was Short's 14th home run of the season, tying him with league leaders Loman and former Salem Red Sox Ryan Lavarnway.

Salem picked up a run in the seventh on a Peter Hissey groundout and Winston matched that with a Short RBI single in the eighth inning.

Hector Santiago gave up two more runs in the eighth and Tyson Corley allowed another in the ninth, but the Dash had built up too large a lead for the Red Sox to overcome. Corley struck out Ryan Dent with the tying run in the on deck circle to finish off the home team. He was credited with his second save in three opportunities this season.

Dylan Axelrod (5-1) picked up the win with five solid innings. He allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits. Clay was tagged with his third loss to Winston-Salem, giving up five runs on eight hits over 5.1 innings.

Shelton had base hits in his first three at bats and went 3 for 4 on the night with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. It was his first three-hit game in nearly two months, tying a season-high. Short finished a triple shy of the cycle, going 3 for 5 with a home run, a double, two runs scored and three RBI.

The only two Dash starters who went hitless were Loman (0 for 5) and Jon Gilmore (0 for 4). The latter was ejected for throwing his bat after being called out on strikes to end the sixth inning.

With the series tied at a game apiece, Winston-Salem looks for its second straight win on Friday night. RHP Nate Jones (7-3, 4.72) matches up with RHP Stolmy Pimentel (5-7, 4.61), who faced two batters in Sunday's Futures Game in Anaheim. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and the broadcast begins at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com .

The Dash returns to BB&T Ballpark on Thursday, July 22 for a series against the Potomac Nationals.
