Kinston Indians News Release

Kinston bats went silent as Potomac limited Kinston to four hits on their way to a 6-1 win Thursday afternoon in Woodbridge, VA.

Kinston starter Marty Popham cruised through the first three innings, retiring the first nine batters he faced. Popham would run into trouble in the bottom of

the fourth as Josh Johnson led off with a double. Steve Lombardozzi followed with a single, pushing Johnson to third. Derek Norris got Potomac on the board with a sacrifice fly scoring Johnson. Lombardozzi then helped manufacture run number two, stealing second base, and then advancing to third on a Popham wild pitch. Another Popham wild pitch brought Lombardozzi home and gave Potomac a 2-0 lead. With two outs in the inning Popham gave up a solo home run to Tyler Moore. The shot to center was Moore's team leading eleventh of the season. The big inning continued when Robby Jacobsen was hit by a pitch and then advanced to second on a passed ball. Jacobsen then scored when Kinston second baseman Karexon Sanchez had trouble gathering an infield single from Brian Peacock. The sloppy inning ended with Kinston trailing 4-0. Popham (1-3) takes the loss, giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits. Popham did not walk a batter and struck out one.

Kinston's offense did not get the early wake-up call, as the Indians managed just two hits through the first seven innings. That changed in the top of the eight inning when Donnie Webb led off with a double. Webb advanced to third base as Montero followed with a single. Justin Toole then grounded into a double play, scoring Webb. Kinston had a chance later in the inning as two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases with two outs. Potomac then went to the bullpen for their closer Dan Leatherman. Leatherman struck out Nate Recknagle to end the inning and the comeback threat. Potomac would add a couple of runs off of Kinston reliever Austin Adams in the seventh and eight innings. Adams went four innings giving up four hits and two runs (one earned). Adams walked two and struck out three. Adams has given up just three earned runs in four appearances this season, all three coming to Potomac.

Kinston finished with four hits in the game, Lucas Montero went 2-for-3 with two singles. Potomac starter A.J. Morris (2-2) got the win for the Nationals, giving up just two hits in five innings. Leatherman picked up his ninth save of the season.

The K-Tribe continues the four game away series with a 7pm start on Friday. T.J. McFarland will take the mound for Kinston.
