THE HILLCATS: Last night Lynchburg topped Myrtle Beach 5-3 in the series opener of a four-game set at BB&T Coastal Field...After dropping eight games in a row, the Hillcats have won three of their last four contests...Tonight is the second-game of the series and the fifth game of seven in a row on the road...
VS. MYRTLE BEACH: Lynchburg is 6-4 against Myrtle Beach this season and 3-1 on the Grand Strand...After losing the first series at City Stadium, the Hillcats have taken two out of three in each of the past two sets...This is the first four-game series between the two teams this season...Last season the Cats went 12-8 against the Pelicans...Myrtle Beach holds the all-time advantage in the series with Lynchburg 118-103...
IT'S CALLED MALE BONDING: Lynchburg is in the midst of a seven-game road swing against two Southern Division foes...Over a longer stretch they are at the front end of 21 of 31 games away from the friendly confines of City Stadium...That will be followed by 14 out of 17 games at home towards the end of the month of August...The Hillcats will play 17 of 29 at home next month...
I'LL SPOT YOU: Sunday RHP James Avery made a spot start for Triple-A Louisville and allowed three runs in six innings of work in a no-decision for the Bats...It was his second career start at the Triple-A level, as he also made a spot start for Louisville in 2006...Avery, who has spent the last three seasons at the Double-A level, is scheduled expected to start for Lynchburg again on Friday at Myrtle Beach...RHP Chase Ware made a spot start for the Hillcats Saturday night in Avery's place and did not allow a run in four and 1/3 innings of action...He did not allow a hit through the first four and 1/3 innings in his first start of the season and just his third start of his professional career...In his first five games (11 and 1/3 innings) with the Cats he has not given up a run...Earlier this season while pitching for Low-A Dayton, Ware threw 22 and 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings...All 13 of his appearances his senior season at Arkansas State University were as a starter and he is slated to start again on tonight against the Pelicans...
CATCH ME IF YOU CAN: Yesterday OF Felix Perez was called up to Double-A Carolina...He was hitting .338 in 16 games with four doubles, two triples and nine RBI for the Hillcats...He was 5-for-11 (.455) with two triples and five RBI in last weekend's series at Winston-Salem...In six games against the Dash, Perez had a hit in each one...Overall against Winston he went 11-for-24 (.458) with two doubles, two triples and six RBI...He had seven multi-hit games, including a career-best four against the Dash on the Fourth of July...This is the 25-year-old's first season in the United States after defecting from Cuba, and signing with the Reds this year...
HOTCHKISS AND THE HILLCATS: RHP Jordan Hotchkiss tossed seven scoreless innings last night to earn his team-leading sixth win of the season for the Hillcats...He lowered his earned run average to 2.35 and again became eligible for the league leaders, ranking second in the Carolina League...In his last two starts he has tossed a combined 14 and 2/3 innings of action...This season in three games (two starts) against Myrtle Beach the right-hander is 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA (one unearned run in 14 innings)...
RESPECT MY AUTHORITY: C Kevin Coddington threw out a potential base thief last night and has now thrown out 32% (10-for-31) of base stealers with Lynchburg...The backstop gunned down eight of the first 12 (67%) who tried to swipe on him, but had now thrown out a runner since with 17 consecutive successful tries against him...The lone caught stealing over that time was on a pick-off by the pitcher...
COME BACK AND DAY OH: OF Kyle Day went 2-for-4 last night with an RBI...He has hit in 12 of his last 14 games and over that time he is 20-for-44 (.455) with three doubles, a triple, a grand slam, ten RBI, eight runs scored, five walks and three steals...In those 14 contests Day has raised his average from .226 to .272...
NO MORE FOR SOTO: UTIL Neftali Soto went 0-for-4 last night to bring an end to his season-high nine-game hitting streak...Over that time he went 13-for-40 (.325) with three doubles, a triple, a home run, four RBI and two runs scored...His average has gone from .251 to .260 over this stretch...In 15 day games this season, he is batting .317 with eight doubles, two home runs and 11 RBI...In night contests he is hitting .248...During the day his slugging percentage is .550 and his OPS is .894...In nights games his slugging percentage is .408 and his OPS is .706...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: LHP Matt Crim was selected by the Braves in the 21st round of last years draft out of The Citadel...His senior season in the Southern Conference he went 8-4 with a 4.10 ERA in 14 starts...He made his professional debut last year with Rookie Danville and had a 10-2 mark with a 3.18 ERA in 13 games (11 starts)...He led the Appalachian League in wins and was eighth in ERA...This season at the Advanced-A level he has gone 4-9 with a 5.03 ERA in 19 games (14 starts) with Myrtle Beach...In two starts against Lynchburg 0-1 with 5.73 ERA (seven earned runs in 11 innings)...Crim has lost five straight starts and in his last two outings he is 0-2 with a 12.20 ERA (14 earned runs in 10 and 1/3 innings)...
