Five-Run First Guides Suns to 8-3 Win over BayBears

JACKSONVILLE, FL - A five-run first inning helped the Jacksonville Suns (41-25, 77-59) set the tone en route to an 8-3 series-opening victory over the Mobile BayBears (37-27, 79-54) on Friday night from Bragan Field in front of a great crowd of over 8,000.

Jose Urena (W, 13-8) was sharp in his Friday night start, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits with no walks and seven strikeouts over the course of his seven innings. With the win, Urena now moves into a tie with teammate Justin Nicolino for the Southern League lead in wins with 13.

Matt Ramsey (H, 2) retired all three hitters he faced in a 1-2-3 top of the eighth inning, picking up one strikeout in his relief effort.

Collin Cargill finished off the ballgame by retiring the side in order in the top of the ninth in a non-save situation.

Archie Bradley (L, 2-3) took the loss for Mobile after surrendering five runs (all earned) on one hit and five walks as he retired one batter in his Friday night start.

The Suns grabbed the early advantage by sending ten men to the plate and scoring five times in the bottom of the first. The Suns received a Viosergy Rosa RBI single, back-to-back bases loaded walks to Brady Shoemaker and Terrence Dayleg and a two-run single from Isaac Galloway to go ahead by a 5-0 score after one inning of play.

The BayBears countered by plating a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. Mobile got a run on Dallas Tarleton's RBI double and another on Austin Nola's throwing error to make it a 5-2 Suns lead after one and a half innings.

That 5-2 score held until Mobile grabbed a run in the top of the seventh. Ryan Court brought in Dallas Tarleton with a two-out RBI double to cut the lead to two, with the Suns leading 5-3 after six and a half innings of play.

The Suns were able to create a little bit of breathing room by scoring twice in the bottom of the eighth. Terrence Dayleg's two-run double into the right-center gap and Ryan Rieger's pinch-hit RBI double made it an 8-3 Suns lead with eight innings in the books.

The Suns and BayBears will be back at it for a doubleheader on Saturday, with first pitch of game one set for 5:05 p.m. ET from Bragan Field, with game two scheduled to get underway approximately 30 minutes following the completion of the first ballgame. In game one, the Suns will start right-hander Jay Rogers (6-5, 4.67) while the BayBears will counter with a righty of their own in Braden Shipley (1-1, 3.00). For game two, the Suns will send out right-hander Jon Link (1-0, 4.50), while the BayBears will give the ball to righty Aaron Blair (4-1, 2.18).
