Five Run Eighth Sinks Tornadoes 8-3
June 6, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release
The Tornadoes battled back to take a 3-2 lead in the third from a Jerod Edmondson homer, but made three of their five errors in the eighth inning as the Quebec Capitales took the middle game of the series 8-3 at Le Stade Municipal Wednesday night.
For the second game in a row, the Capitales' starting pitcher worked eight innings of three-run ball, as Karl Gelinas won his fourth straight start to begin the 2012 season. He allowed five hits and didn't walk a batter, striking out seven Worcester hitters.
The Capitales started the game's scoring in the first with a Rene Leveret single to plate Jonathan Malo, the first of three hitters in a row to record a single off of Zuercher. One inning later, Steve Brown's first homerun of the season made it 2-0 Quebec.
The Tornadoes scored thrice in the third to take a 3-2 lead, thanks in part to a Tony Patane RBI groundout to score Cameron Monger who had doubled, and also because of a two-run homer for Jerod Edmondson to push Worcester ahead (his third of the year).
Quebec retied the game in the fifth with a single run on Josh Colafemina's single, which capped the scoring until the bottom of the eighth. Colafemina was one of two Capitales hitters to ground into an inning-ending double play. All five of the Tornadoes twin killings thus far in the series have been to end Quebec rallies.
Les Capitales stranded at least one baserunner in every single inning.
Zach Zuercher got a no decision for the 'Nadoes, pitching six innings. The southpaw struck three batters out, walked three, and gave up ten hits, allowing the first three Capitales runs to score.
The loss went to Kyle Regnault, who allowed three runs in 1.1 innings of work, despite striking out three hitters. He also gave up three hits, and two of his three runs came across the plate after he left the game.
Mike Mullen finished the night for the Tornadoes on the mound, tossing 0.2 innings, striking out one batter, intentionally walking another, and giving up one run (unearned) on one hit of his own.
Chris Cox, whom the Tornadoes beat back on May 21 in his only decision, pitched a scoreless ninth inning for Quebec. He struck out a pair of batters, both on pitches in the dirt, and walked one. He also allowed one hit, an Alex Trezza double to lead off the final half inning.
