Five Intimidators errors help Hoppers bounce back

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Kannapolis Intimidators matched a season-high five errors and the Greensboro Grasshoppers offense hammered out 12 hits as the Intimidators dropped the series finale, 11-5, on Saturday night at NewBridge Bank Park.

Kannapolis committed three errors in the fifth inning -- one of which could have been turned for a double play -- leading to four Greensboro runs, as the Grasshoppers extended their lead to 11-3 after five inning with five unearned runs scored.

Kannapolis jumped out to an early 3-0 lead thanks to a Juan Silverio RBI-double in the first inning to cash Trayce Thompson and Kyle Eveland's two-run home run (4) in the second inning. Greensboro answered with a five-run rally off Intimidators starter Steven Upchurch in the bottom of the second to chase him from the game. Upchurch (2-5) went 1 and 1/3 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts in a losing effort.

Marcell Ozuna led off the second inning with a single, and Isaac Galloway doubled him over to third base. James Wooster and Daniel Black each followed with RBI-singles, and Wilfredo Gimenez hit his way onto the bases. Noah Perio hit a ball down the first-base line got struck behind the bullpen bench in foul territory for two-run a ground-rule double to bring in Wooster and Black.

The Grasshoppers extended their lead in the third inning on Wooster's two-run home run off reliever Reid Kelly for a 7-3 edge over the Intimidators. Kelly tossed 2 and 2/3 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits with three strikeouts.

Terance Marin pitched the error-filled fifth inning, allowing four runs (one earned) before keeping the Grasshoppers off the scoreboard in the sixth and seventh. Dan Black blasted a two-run home run (8) with two outs in the top of the seventh, making it 11-5 Grasshoppers. Jake Wilson pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth for Kannapolis.

Greensboro starter Jheyson Manzueta (1-5) earned his first win of the season in 12 starts, going five innings and allowing three runs on four hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Holden Sprague and Grant Dayton pitched in relief for the Grasshoppers.

Tonight's game started after an hour and 13 minutes rain delay.

The Intimidators return to Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Sunday to begin an eight-game home stand to wrap up the first half, starting with a four-game series against the Delmarva Shorebirds. Kannapolis will send RHP Matt Heidenreich to the mound against Delmarva's LHP Tim Berry. First pitch Sunday is at 5:05 p.m.
