Five Errors Leads To 9-2 Loss

North Little Rock-Arkansas Travelers lost 9-2 to the Northwest Arkansas Naturals on Saturday at Dickey-Stephens Park. The Travs scored early in the first inning, but could get anything going after that. Travs fielders committed a season-high five errors leading to eight unearned runs. The Naturals capitalized on their extra chances getting eight hits in the game, with four of those hits coming with two outs.

After the loss the Travs second half record drops to 2-2 (28-46), and the Naturals improve to 3-1 (45-29).

The Travs started right-hander Tyler Chatwood (0-2) who got the loss giving up eight runs, just one earned, on seven hits. The Naturals started right-hander Aaron Crow (5-6) who earned the win throwing seven innings, giving up four hits and just two runs while adding seven strikeouts.

The Travs struck early in the bottom of the first putting up two runs. Kevin Ramos hit a one out single to right to start things off. Jeremy Moore came up and got behind in the count quick, but found a pitch he liked and hit a two run home run (7) to right field to put the Travs on the board. Crow got two quick out right after with a fly ball to first from Julio Perez and a grounder to short from Richard Cates to end the inning.

The Naturals answered back in the top of the second, putting up three runs of their own. Chatwood got two quick outs, but when Tim Smith hit a chopper to second Abel Nieves missed the ground ball to allowed Smith to reach on an error. Anthony Seratelli walked, followed by an infield single by Chris McConnell scoring Smith from second. Derrick Robinson came up and hit a high chopper to short but by the time Ramos could throw to first, Robinson was already there for an infield hit to load the bases. Johnny Giavotella came up next and hit a single that scored Seratelli and McConnell to put the Naturals on top 3-2. Mike Moustakas came up with two outs and runners on second and third, but he couldn't come through grounding out to second to end the inning.

The Naturals put three more runs on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Smith led off and hit a ground ball to shortstop that was overthrown by Kevin Ramos allowing Smith to reach safely. Ramos made three errors during the game. Seratelli drew his second walk of the game to put runners on first and second. McConnell laid down a sacrifice bunt that moved the runners to second and third. Derrick Robinson came up and hit a ground ball up the middle that took Travs second basemen Nieves to his right, and when he threw home to get Smith, the throw was not in time. Robinson stole second to put runners on second and third, and Giavotella hit a soft line drive into right field that scored both runners to make the score 6-2. Mike Moustakas came to the plate with two outs and a runner on first, and he hit a deep fly ball to center tha t was run down for the second out of the inning. On the hit, Giavotella took off and rounded second base, and when Travs center fielder Tyson Auer made the catch he threw back to first to Giavotella back to the bag to end the inning.

In the top of the sixth inning the Naturals add two more runs making the score 8-2. Smith led things off with a single to right, and he stole second to put a runner in scoring position with no outs. Seratelli grounded to first to move Smith to third with one out. McConnell came up and hit a fly ball to center, allowing Smith to tag form third and score. Derrick Robinson came to the plate next and hit a single to right, followed by a walk to Giavotella putting runners on first and second for Moustakas. Moustakas hit a line drive that slide under Ramos's glove letting Robinson come across the plate to make the score 8-2. Clint Robinson came up with runners on first and second and hit a pop fly to catcher to end the inning.

The Naturals added one more run in the top of the seventh inning. Paulo Orlando led off and reached base on a dropped fly ball in left field. Smith drew a one out walk, but was forced out on a fielder's choice by Seratelli. McConnell came up next and ground to short, but Ramos threw the ball in the dirt and allowed McConnell to reach base and let Orlando cross the plate to make the score 9-2.

Time of game was 2:53 and the paid attendance was 5,520.

The Travs return to action on Sunday against the Northwest Arkansas. The Travs will start lefty Trevor Reckling (4-7, 8.53 ERA at triple-A Salt Lake) against the Naturals starter Eduardo Paulino (1-1, 4.66). The game will start at 6:00 and the gates open at 4.
