Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - Still searching for their first win of the 2nd half, the Springfield Cardinals hoped their Patriotic themed jerseys could help turn things around for Independence weekend and the 2nd game of their series with the Tulsa Drillers.
Cardinals' starter Mark Diapoules ran into trouble early in the top of the 1st inning when he walked the bases loaded and then allowed Daniel Mayora to hit an RBI single that brought the Drillers to a 1-0 lead. Diapoules then hit Wilin Rosario with a pitch that scored Jason Van Kooten to increase the lead to 2-0. Kiel Roling would also find himself in the way of a Diapoules pitch to score Bronson Sardinha and make the score 3-0. Diapoules could not find the strike zone as he then walked Matt Repec to score Daniel Mayora and give the Drillers a 4-0 lead in the 1st inning. With the bases still loaded, the Cardinals would then elect to relieve Mark Diapoules with Jason Buursma who would not allow another run in the inning.
The Cardinals would strike back against the Drillers starter Keith Weiser in the bottom of the 1st inning when Steven Hill hit an RBI double to score Adron Chambers and take the score to 4-1. Curt Smith would then hit a two-run triple down the right field line to narrow the Drillers lead at 4-3. The Cardinals offense then evened up the ball game when Pete Kozma hit an RBI sacrifice fly that scored Curt Smith and tied the game, 4-4.
Scoring came again in the top of the 2nd inning when Ryan Harvey hit a solo home run off of Jason Buursma to give the Drillers a 5-4 lead.
Jason Buursma surrendered another solo home run in the top of the 3rd inning when Wilin Rosario launched a ball out of the ball park to make the score 6-4.
The homerun onslaught continued in the bottom of the 3rd inning when Curt Smith hit a solo shot over the left field fence to bring the score to 6-5.
The Cardinals got even in the bottom of the 6th inning when Jose Garcia grounded into a double play that allowed Aaron Luna to score from 3rd base and tie the game at 6-6.
The Drillers quickly regained the lead in the top of the 7th inning when Francisco Samuel allowed Wilin Rosario to hit his 2nd solo home run of the game and take the score to 7-6.
The top of the order for the Cardinals struck again in the bottom of the 7th inning when Steven Hill hit an RBI double off of Ching Lung Lo to tie the game at 7-7. The Cardinals then took their first lead of the day when Curt Smith hit a double off the center field wall that scored Steven Hill and made the score 8-7. The Drillers would then bring in reliever Chris Malone, but Malone would soon surrender a wild pitch that scored Curt Smith and made the Cardinals lead two runs, 9-7. Jose Garcia would add more runs against Malone when he hit a two RBI single that increased the Cardinals lead to 11-7.
The Drillers offense produced runs against another Cardinals pitcher in the top of the 8th inning when Adam Reifer allowed a two run home run to Bronson Sardinha to make the score 11-9.
Tony Cruz gave the Cardinals some insurance in the bottom of the 8th inning when he hit a solo home run off of Chris Malone to increase the Cardinals lead to 12-9.
Adam Reifer returned in the top of the 9th inning and retired all three Drillers batters he faced to end the game at 12-9. In a game where both teams combined for five home runs, the Cardinals found a way to edge the Drillers with 12 runs on 12 hits.
Springfield will continue their four game series with the Drillers Sunday evening. The Cardinals will send right hander Scott McGregor (1-0) to the mound against right hander Cory Riordan (3-4) of Tulsa.
Sunday will continue with the Independence Weekend theme as there will be another Firework Extravaganza following the game featuring the Springfield Symphony Orchestra. Sunday is also Hiland Dairy Ice Cream Sunday where all kids coming into the park receive a free ice cream treat prior to the game and, new to Season Six, will be Wild Animal Safari petting zoo prior to the game on the Prime Patio. And, as always, kids are invited to run the bases following the game.
