Fisher Drives Home Both Runs in Loss to Mudcats
August 2, 2023 - Carolina League (CarL)
Fayetteville Woodpeckers News Release
Fayetteville, NC - The Fayetteville Woodpeckers (44-54, 14-18 2nd Half) surrendered a pair of early runs in the first inning and trailed for the entirety of the night in a 5-2 loss to the Carolina Mudcats (53-42, 20-12 2nd Half) Wednesday at Segra Stadium. Not much was generated offensively with Brice Matthews' and Cam Fisher's two-hit games accounting for all four base hits.
Andrew Taylor (L, 4-6) labored through a long first inning and was forced to face seven Carolina hitters, allowing two runs on four hits. Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the first, Matthews drew a leadoff walk and scored on an RBI single from Fisher that cut it to 2-1.
Carolina struck for another two-run inning in the third when Luis Castillo tagged a line drive to right with the bases loaded that scored Daniel Guilarte and Tayden Hall. Taylor managed to escape the inning with his fifth strikeout but did not return after allowing four total earned runs.
Matthews and Fisher teamed up again in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit. The first-round pick from Nebraska pulled a single through the left side, stole second base, then scored on a Fisher triple that rolled into the right field corner.
Quinton Low and Tyler Wherle (W, 8-5) shut down the Fayetteville lineup thereafter, combining to retire 13 straight hitters until Sandro Gaston walked to begin the eighth.
Meanwhile, Carolina added their final run in the fifth on a wild pitch from Deury Carrasco. The Fayetteville reliever struck out five before turning the ball over to Alimber Santa in the sixth inning. Santa delivered one of his best relief appearances of the season despite pitching from behind, tossing four scoreless innings and striking out seven. Fayetteville pitching struck out a total of 17 Carolina hitters in the game.
The tying run did step to the plate in the eighth and ninth innings, but the double-play ball proved a major momentum killer. Luis Baez rolled into a 5-4-3 twin-killing in the eighth and Luis Encarnacion bounced into the game-ending double-play facing Yerlin Rodriguez (SV, 7) with two runners on in the final frame.
The even series continues Thursday night with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. The Woodpeckers are projected to start RHP Amilcar Chirinos (0-3, 5.79 ERA) and Carolina will send RHP Patricio Aquino (4-3, 2.79 ER) to the mound. Awareness week continues as well with Blood Cancer Awareness Night at the ballpark.
