Fisher Cats Use Big Ninth to Top B-Mets, 6-3

BINGHAMTON, NY - The New Hampshire Fisher Cats broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the ninth inning with three more runs to beat Binghamton Mets, 6-3, on Friday night at NYSEG Stadium. Both Binghamton's Darin Gorski and New Hampshire's Aaron Sanchez struck out six batters in six innings.

After a scoreless first, the Fisher Cats got on the board with a solo home run by Gabe Jacobo in the top of the second inning. He hit the first pitch he saw over the wall in left field to give New Hampshire a 1-0 lead.

That margin was extended to 2-0 in the top of the fourth inning. This time it was Brad Glenn hitting the first pitch he saw over the left-field wall. It was the first home run of the season for the 2013 New Hampshire MVP.

New Hampshire tallied one final solo shot in the sixth inning. Ryan Schimpf smacked a lead-off home run to right field and the B-Met's deficit grew to 3-0.

That was more than enough run support for Fisher Cat starter Aaron Sanchez. The right-hander gave up just four hits and two walks in six shutout innings. Sanchez allowed four walks and hit three batters in a loss to Binghamton in his previous outing.

Once Sanchez left the game, though, the Mets got it rolling. In the seventh inning, Fisher Cat reliever Wil Browning allowed all three batters he faced to reach. Scott Gracey inherited the bases loaded and walked Wilfredo Tovar to bring in Binghamton's first run. Following a strikeout, Matt Reynolds singled to right-center field to make it a one run game. Tony Davis replaced Gracey, but his first pitch got by New Hampshire catcher Jack Murphy. Travis Taijeron scored to tie the game on the passed ball.

The score remained square until the top of the ninth. With Jon Velasquez on the mound for the B-Mets, the first three batters reached. Jon Berti hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in the go-ahead run to score. Two batters later, Glenn knocked in two more runners with a single to right-center field pushing New Hampshire to a 6-3 lead. He finished the game with three RBI. Gregory Infante sent the Binghamton down in order in the bottom half of the frame to earn his second save of the season.

Davis (1-0) earned both the win and the blown save for the Fisher Cats. He struck out three and allowed just one base runner in 1.1 innings. Velasquez (0-1) was tagged for three runs in his one inning of work and suffered the loss.

The B-Mets (8-5) look to take the series against the Fisher Cats (5-8) on Saturday at 1:05 PM. RHP Rainy Lara hits the mound against RHP Deck McGuire. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show begins at 12:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
