
Fisher Cats' Offense Explodes in Win Over Fightin Phils

(Reading, PA) - Another barrage of offense from the New Hampshire Fisher Cats led them to a 14-6 victory over the Reading Fightin Phils on Friday night.
New Hampshire wasted little time getting started. In the top of the first inning, After Steward Berroa walked to lead off the game, Miguel Hiraldo followed with a double to score Berroa. Trevor Schwecke reached via a walk and then Orelvis Martinez crushed a three-run shot to put the Fisher Cats up 4-0.
But, it didn't take Reading long to fight back. After Madison Stokes walked to lead off the bottom of the first, Carlos De La Cruz smacked his seventh home run of the season to cut the deficit in half. Drew Ellis followed with a double and came around to score on a Matthew Kroon two-bagger to make it 4-3 New Hampshire at the end of the first.
The Fisher Cats added another run in the third to go up 5-3. Back-to-back walks and then a single from Will Robertson scored the next run. The teams then traded a scoreless bottom of the second and top of the third, but the scoring continued from Reading in the bottom of the third.
Ellis walked and scored on a double from Ethan Wilson. Then, Kroon got aboard on a fielder's choice and came around to score on an Oliver Dunn opposite-field home run to give Reading a 6-5 lead at the time. But, New Hampshire then responded with eight unanswered runs.
The run started with five runs in the top of the fourth. That inning featured a Schwecke double and another home run from Martinez. His second home run of the night tied him for second in the Eastern League in home runs with nine. In the fifth, the Fisher Cats tacked on three more runs, including a single from PK Morris and a home run from Hiraldo to continue his strong night.
Neither starter had their best stuff tonight. Sem Robberse for New Hampshire went just three innings, allowing six hits and six runs, while walking two and striking out five Fightin Phils. On the other side, Mick Abel went 3.2 innings, allowing nine runs on five hits, while walking a season-high five batters and collecting four strikeouts.
Abel suffered the loss to fall to 2-2 on the season, while the win went to Gabriel Ponce earned the win for New Hampshire to improve to 1-0 on the season.
With the win, New Hampshire improves to 16-14 on the season, while Reading falls to 11-19. The teams are back on the field Saturday night at 6:45 p.m. for game five of this week's six-game series. Women at Sunday's 5:15 p.m. game will receive a "Mother's Day R-Phils Pink Hat," thanks to Reading Hospital McGlinn Cancer Institute.
