New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release

Manchester, NH- The New Hampshire Fisher Cats, the AA Eastern League Affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, have announced the name of their newest player. Prior to last night's contest with the Harrisburg Senators, the AA affiliate of the Montreal Expos, the Fisher Cats welcomed their mascot by his new name. FUNGO was welcomed with roaring applause but this time fans and teammates now know what to call him.

The name FUNGO was submitted by numerous fan suggestions at Gill Stadium during the period of June 18-25 of and was ultimately declared the winner on July 9, 2004, as a result of the team's website voting which took place from June 28-July 8, 2004. The Fisher Cats are very excited about the creative name that the fans have chosen. The name FUNGO has dual symbolism for the Fisher Cats. In a baseball context, the word FUNGO is the name of the type of bat that is used to hit baseballs to players during team practices. Another interesting quality of the name is that it has the word "fun" in it. After all, "where ever the fun goes, he will go!"

Minor League Baseball's newest mascot has garnered national attention and will be featured in the August issue of AT THE YARD, Minor League Baseball's newest publication.

FUNGO was unveiled by police escort on June 18, 2004, prior to the Fisher Cats game against the Trenton Thunder, the AA Affiliate of the New York Yankees, and was welcomed with roaring applause. The team then began a two phase "name the mascot" contest that involved name submissions at Gill Stadium followed by website voting on www.nhfishercats.com.

The 5 names that were apart of the final stage of the contest were as follows:

1. Fungo
2. Klawz
3. Fletch
4. Fisky
5. Trackz
