New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release

New Britain, CT- Former Major Leaguer Matt Roney, just added to the Fisher Cats bullpen, struck out Kyle Geiger and Brandon Roberts with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning as New Hampshire held off New Britain 8-7 Monday night in the opener of a five-game series.

The win was the 500th of Manager Bill Masse's career. Masse, in his first year in the Toronto Blue Jays organization, spent two years in the Montreal Expos system as a manager and five with the New York Yankees.

New Hampshire (35-31) earned its third straight win, handing New Britain (31-33) a seventh straight loss.

Jesse Litsch (7-2) allowed 3 ER in 6.1 IP to pick up the win. New Hampshire appeared to be cruising, building an 8-2 lead, knocking starter and loser Brad Baker (2-5) out after five innings. Sergio Santos (3-for-5, 3 RBI) drove in runs in three consecutive at-bats, with two doubles and a single. C Robinzon Diaz (3-for-5) extended his hitting streak to 12 games, driving in a run with a single. 3B Rob Cosby (2-for-5) hit his sixth homer, driving in two runs.

New Britain scored single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, but still trailed 8-4 entering the ninth. After Seth Overbey and Tracy Thorpe did not retire any of the first five batters they faced, Bill Masse summoned Matt Roney into an 8-6 game with the bases loaded and no outs. New Britain did get one more run on a sacrifice fly, but Roney recorded the two strikeouts, including the one of Brandon Roberts to end the game, the RELCO Enlightening Play of the Game.

The Fisher Cats continue the series in New Britain Tuesday night. Left-hander Kurt Isenberg (1-3, 4.66) will pitch against Rock Cats' righty Jesse Floyd (4-4, 3.45) at 6:35pm. Radio coverage begins at 6:15pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network (610-AM, Manchester; 930-AM, Rochester; 1540-AM, Exeter) with Bob Lipman.
