Eastern League Announces Weekly Award Winners

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the Major League Baseball Advanced Media selections for the Eastern League Pitcher and Player of the Week for the week ending June 17th:

Connecticut Defenders outfielder John Bowker has been named the Eastern League's Player of the Week for the week ending June 17th. The 6'2", 190 lb. slugger had an excellent week for the Defenders, batting .478 (11-for-23) with two doubles, two home runs, 12 RBI, seven runs scored, four walks, one stolen base and a .826 slugging percentage in seven games. Bowker, a native of Sacramento, California, had four multiple hit games during the week, including going 3-for-4 with a grand slam in Connecticut's 8-6 win over Altoona on Sunday. The 23-year old is currently ranked second in the league in total bases (124) and is tied for third in RBI (41) and hits (72). John, who is batting .288 in 65 games for the Defenders this season, was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 3rd round of the 2004 draft after hitting .320 (72-for-225) with 15 doubles, seven home runs and 41 RBI as a sophomore at Long Beach State University.

Joba Chamberlain, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Trenton Thunder, is the Eastern League's Pitcher of the Week for the week ending June 17th. The 21-year old was promoted to Trenton from the Tampa Yankees of the Single-A Florida State League last Tuesday and made his Double-A debut that night in the second game of the doubleheader against Connecticut. Chamberlain earned a win against the Defenders by giving up three hits and two walks while striking out nine batters in five shutout innings. The 6'2", 230 lb. hurler was equally impressive in his second start of the week, recording eight strikeouts while giving up one run on three hits and a walk in six innings of work against Reading on Sunday. Joba, who enters the season ranked as the 5th best prospect in the Yankees organization, was selected by the New York Yankees as a supplemental first round pick in the 2006 draft out of the University of Nebraska.
