New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, NH- The New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Double-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, are proud to announce that intern Eric Smolin has been signed by the Philadelphia Phillies. Smolin, a right-handed pitcher from Westford, MA, played for Division-III Western New England College in Springfield (MA). As a senior, he composed an 8-1 record with a 1.85 ERA.
Despite having seven different Major League teams scout him this spring, Smolin was not selected in the Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft two weeks ago. He thought his dream of playing baseball professionally was over until receiving a call from the Phillies today.
"I wasn't expecting this at all," said Smolin, who was "shocked" to receive the call inviting him to join the Phillies' Gulf Coast League team, which begins its season tomorrow. He is making plans to join the team as soon as possible in Clearwater, FL.
"We are excited that Eric has earned this opportunity," said Fisher Cats President/General Manager Rick Brenner. "We wish him the best of luck in his career and look forward to seeing him back in New Hampshire when he reaches the Double-A level."
Smolin leaves after one month as a Fisher Cats' intern, where he worked in ticket sales, promotions and marketing.
Smolin was named to the 2007 Rawlings American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Division III All-American Second Team. He was also selected as the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) Division III Pitcher of the Year and voted to the All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) First Team.
The Fisher Cats open an eight-game homestand Friday night when they host the Portland Sea Dogs in a 7:05pm game at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. The first 2,000 fans receive a FREE T-shirt, courtesy of Northeast Delta Dental. And there will win a Used Car, courtesy of Twisted Tea.
