New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
READING, Pa. - Matt Boyd pitched six strong innings and Ryan Schimpf blasted his 39th career Fisher Cats home run to propel the Fisher Cats past the Reading Fightin Phils, 3-1, on Thursday afternoon. While it may seem to be an ordinary victory in May, the win had much more relevance for the Fisher Cats as they snapped a franchise-worst 11-game losing streak that began on May 11.
Boyd started his day having not made it out of five innings in any of his first four Double-A starts. His day began in the right fashion as he mowed the Phils down 1-2-3 in each of the first three innings.
In the fourth, the Fisher Cats got him the game's first run when Andy Burns brought home Ryan Schimpf on a fielder's choice for a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, after Boyd retired the first two men to make it 11 straight, he issued a two-out walk to Brock Stassi. Stassi stole second, and then scored on a two-out single by Cam Perkins to tie the game at 1-1.
Boyd wouldn't allow a base runner for the rest of his outing. He finished six innings, giving up a run on one hit, one walk, and four strikeouts in a no-decision.
In the eighth, Schimpf and Co. took the lead against Reading starter Severino Gonzalez. With one out, Jon Berti extended his hit streak to 12 games with a base hit to center field. Schimpf followed with a titanic home run to right to break the game in the Fisher Cats favor, 3-1.
Tyler Ybarra followed Boyd and kept the Phils scoreless in the seventh and the eighth. Randy Boone pitched the ninth to secure his first save of the season and end the Fisher Cats losing skid.
New Hampshire now comes home to face the Future Red Sox, the Portland Sea Dogs, in a holiday weekend series at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.
